      Overview As a member of the Office of General Counsel team, you will help create a strong sense of commitment and belief in the PNNL mission; help accelerate Laboratory growth by advancing and protecting PNNL's reputation; and help generate understanding of the value PNNL brings to the region and the nation. This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel and will work with management and staff at all levels within PNNL. The individual selected for this position will be expected to partner closely with PNNL Directorates to develop and deliver operational and business strategies that advance, promotes, and accomplishes the PNNL mission. If selected for the position, your key responsibilities and accountabilities will be focused on operations, employment and ethical business practices and litigation management and will include: Partnering collaboratively with the operations and business teams to provide advice and counsel with respect to PNNL engagement, real estate and general business strategies Partnering collaboratively with Human Resources to provide advice and counsel on employment law matters Proactively identifying solutions to problems and risk mitigation strategies that support compliance and mission success Working with all levels of PNNL management and staff to address concerns and issues that may arise Leading efforts and working collaboratively with outside counsel when warranted to represent Battelle in matters involving litigation, administrative proceedings, arbitrations, mediations, investigations, and other proceedings Managing litigation to include retaining, monitoring, and working with outside counsel as needed, ensuring compliance with applicable litigation management regulations, rules and procedures Handling and overseeing responses to subpoenas, Freedom of Information Act and other document requests. Participating on multi-disciplinary teams to address issues and develop strategies that accomplish the PNNL mission Identifying and analyzing a range of general law legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations, and assuring legal compliance Researching and analyzing case law, statutes, and regulations as well as drafting appropriate legal guidance Working with the Office of General Counsel team to provide legal support on a range of general law subject areas and issues as necessary to properly represent Battelle and its efforts to successfully accomplish the PNNL mission Responsibilities Provides independent legal advice as a subject matter expert on tactical and strategic matters as a counselor and advisor to internal business clients concerning legal rights, obligations, and privileges of Battelle Memorial Institute. Represents Battelle and the laboratory directly or by managing outside counsel on legal issues in an area of designated expertise which may include but is not limited to litigation, employment, labor, export control, immigration, environmental, safety, health, contracts and transactions (commercial and government), security (physical and information), national security and/or tax. Provides investigation services as needed. Develops, reviews, or implements PNNL-wide and/or functionally specific training programs. Maintains currency on legislative issues, statutes, decisions, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies. Must have a law degree, be admitted and in good standing to practice law in the State of Washington or be willing/able to obtain licensure upon employment. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: JD and 12+ years of experience -AND- Professional license and/or certification required Preferred Qualifications: Experience working for or representing a federal contractor Demonstrated ability to team with others Demonstrated ability to collaborate at all management levels Courtroom experience with litigation (including administrative hearings), alternative dispute resolution, and administrative proceedings Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Requirements: * U.S. Citizenship * Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. *Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated. Testing Designated Position This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
