      The opportunity:

      • This position reports directly to the U.S. Business Group Senior Compliance Officer (a/k/a Chief Compliance Officer or CCO) who is a Vice President in the U.S. Business Group.
      • Leading the U.S. Privacy, Financial Crime, Anti-Fraud, Regulatory Compliance Management and Exam Coordination programs and staff
      • Direct management of corresponding Corporate Compliance program leaders and teams to achieve outcomes that balances enterprise and local mandates appropriately
      • The AVP, U.S. Compliance will be comfortable with data analytics and leverages data for insights, serves as a Business Unit Compliance Officer (BUCO) or have BUCOs report to them and collaborate with the other Compliance AVPs and VP in delivering high quality services to clients

      How you will contribute:

      • Maintain technical knowledge of relevant laws and regulations applicable to the Compliance programs and the U.S. Business Group
      • Monitor legal, regulatory or practice trends for potential impact to the U.S. Business Group
      • Provide pro-active advice on legal, regulatory or industry best-practice trends
      • Participate in business unit meetings as required. This includes constructively stating views, opinions and advice that may be in conflict with business objectives.
      • Provide “challenge” to first (1LoD) line functions in connection with risks and controls.
      • Prepare reports, memoranda, certifications and correspondence for the CCO and senior management as assigned.
      • Escalate issues as appropriate to the CCO and/or senior management.
      • Oversee responses to state regulatory examinations or inquiries.
      • Maintain relevant Operating Guidelines and Procedures.
      • Communicate changes in compliance requirements to management and staff as necessary.
      • Supervise appropriate risk based testing of first (1LoD) line controls to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of regulatory controls.
      • Model and set appropriate “tone from the top” in relation to the Code of Business Conduct, other applicable ethical/professional standards and treating customers fairly.
      • Participate in Business Practice reviews, Risk Management and Product Development meetings as needed. Escalate material regulatory or reputation issues to management as necessary.
      • Act as company representative to various trade associations (e.g., ACLI, IAPP, ACAMS), including committee participation.
      • Support the CCO in the development and execution of the annual SL U.S. compliance plan and regular reporting.
      • Support the Sun Life Enterprise CCO and team in the development and execution of the Enterprise Compliance plan.
      • Other duties as assigned

      What you will bring with you:

      • Seasoned insurance or financial services professional with significant, relevant compliance or related experience.
      • Bachelor’s degree (graduate and/or relevant professional designations are preferred).
      • Proven success in working within a collaborative, team-oriented setting.
      • Sound judgment, discretion and analytical skills. Ability to prioritize issues, delegate and recommend practical solutions.
      • Communicates (oral and written) proficiently both within and outside the organization. Skilled at making complex issues intelligible and clear. Skilled negotiator.
      • Able to operate with confidence in ambiguous situations, and to help others to navigate complexity and risk.
      • Excellent leadership skills with a demonstrated record of developing and leading a team of diverse professionals.
      • Knowledge of insurance and/or health care services company fundamentals and operations.
      • Familiarity with regulatory examinations, inquiries and investigations.
      • Familiarity with designing, implementing, using or analyzing data analytics to identify and evaluate compliance risks.
      • Experience working within a matrixed organization preferred.

      • Southern California region: $172,400 - 258,600 annually
      • Central California region: $172,400 - 258,600 annually
      • Northern California region: $172,400 - 258,600 annually

      If you are a Minnesota, Colorado or Nevada resident , the salary range for this position is $172,400 - 258,600 annually

      If you are a Illinois, Connecticut or Maryland resident, the salary range for this position is $172,400 - 258,600 annually

      If you are Washington , Washington D.C., and Rhode Island resident, the salary range for this position is $172,400 - 258,600 annually

      If you are a New York resident , the salary range for this position is $172,400 - 258,600 annually
