- Trained to National level for Clinical Coding (Clinical Coding Foundation Course) and proficient in National clinical coding rules and conventions
- Training in Anatomy & Physiology and medical terminology to national coding standards.
- Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) including qualifications in English and Maths
- GCSE or equivalent in Human Biology
- ECDL or computer proficiency certificate
- Significant experience as a trained clinical coder
- To have attended regular clinical coding training courses
- Previous background in other associated clerical/secretarial or nursing/paramedic positions
- Knowledge of coding procedures and conventions.
- High level of knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of the Data Protection Act and Confidentiality law
- Analysis skills
- Strong communication skills

- Training and mentoring skills
- Ability to prioritise workload
- Well organised, self-motivated with an eye for detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve a common goal

Job summary
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced clinical coder to join the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The candidate will join our professional team of clinical coders and will be a key player to produce consistent, accurate, meaningful and comparable data to facilitate managers and clinicians in the monitoring, planning and provision of high quality patient care.
The trust is looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual with excellent communication skills. This role will require you to work to strict departmental deadlines, whilst still paying attention to detail and always maintaining a high level of accuracy.

The post holder will be required to study for the National Clinical Coding Qualification.
This is a full-time position (37.5 hours) based at Barnet Hospital

Main duties of the job
Abstract and analyse complex and sensitive clinical information from electronic patient record across a broad range of clinical specialties and translate this into a coded format in line with National Standards using ICD10 and OPCS4 classifications.
Have experience in using ICD10 and OPCS classification in an acute hospital setting.
Work within deadlines whilst maintaining a high quality of accuracy and completeness of clinical coding.
Effectively manage assigned workload.
Continue professional education and undertake personal professional development in order to refresh clinical coding skills. Keep up to date on changes to code assignment, coding methodology and local policy amendments to ensure coding reflects the activity of the trust.
