The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) is accountable for integrated water, land and natural resource management and cross-sector legislation, policy, and objective setting for land and marine environments. Building on integrated land and resource management efforts in the past, the Ministry will seek to build a new vision in collaboration with natural resource ministries and First Nations that will embrace shared decision making on the land base. The Ministry will strengthen integration across the sector to mitigate, plan, respond and adapt our management practices, including a focus on effectively managing cumulative effects.

The vision statement of the WLRS South Area Team is: Healthy ecosystems supporting healthy people and healthy economies. We are looking to recruit individuals who share our interests in working across natural resource ministries, support and work toward co-management and shared decision-making with Indigenous Nations, and engage with stakeholders to achieve our vision for current and future generations.

The Director, Strategic Initiatives is involved in conversations with Indigenous Nations, and stakeholders as part of a whole of government approach committed to land use planning rooted in science and Indigenous Knowledge that considers new and cumulative impacts to the land base. This position is also a key player in leading the Regional Management Committee to advance reconciliation and shared priorities across natural resource agencies and in some regions chairs the Indigenous Stewardship Forums. The position is accountable to provide leadership, advice and expertise into the ministry’s annual service and business planning programs; performance management and risk frameworks; provision of professional advice and training to government decision makers; intergovernmental relations matters; staff engagement strategies; and the development of policy and research for high priority ministry or natural resource sector projects.

An in person, regional presence is key to growing relationships with staff, Indigenous partners, stakeholders, and industry. It is anticipated that a 1-2 week presence, per-month, will be necessary for successful delivery.
