      Job summary

      The haemoglobinopathy service at BHRUT is seeking to recruit a registered adult nurse who is keen to develop their clinical skills and knowledge in automated red cell exchange and caring for patients with a red cell condition in a day care setting, offering red cell exchanges, top up blood transfusions, ambulatory pain management and phlebotomy and cannulation. We aim to develop the red cell exchange transfusion service to offer an out of hours service to our sickle cell patients and you would be expected to be part of an on-call team. Experience working in haematology day care is desirable and you will join an already existing team of specialist nurses and will be supported by the Lead Nurse. We are keen to develop our nurses and you will have the opportunity to attend relevant courses to improve your knowledge and confidence in caring for patients with sickle cell, thalassaemia and rare anaemias.

      Main duties of the job

      The role is divided into five general areas -Clinical practice, teaching, research, consulting and management. This post is designed to develop the post holder in nursing skills within haematology nursing to undertake a specialist nursing role within the future.

      The post holder will have a particular focus on red cell exchanges, ensuring patient and family education and a smooth running of the red cell exchange service. Working to an established service and pathway, the post holder will be supported to run automated red cell exchanges for the sickle cell patients. The major goal of this role is to improve the red cell exchange pathway and ambulatory acute pain management for sickle cell patients.

      The post holder will work within the broader multidisciplinary team and in conjunction with the adult specialist nurses and lead nurse to review and support patients; family/carer support; school/higher education liaison and education; GP and community support; local hospital support and education.Along with the clinical team, he/she will be responsible for ensuring the national standards for haemoglobin disorders are met and maintained.

      The post holder will work with the Network multidisciplinary team to provide expert advice, clinical care and management for adults with major haemoglobin disorders and their families and carers. He/she will ensure care is given that recognises not only individual medical needs but also their social, psychological and cultural needs.
