      JOB DESCRIPTION

      The grades 5-8 band director is responsible for collaboratively running the music program and implementation of activities for band students within Saline Area Schools, specifically assigned to Heritage School (grades 4-5) and Saline Middles School (grades 6-8). The band director will lead classes and extracurricular activities, be responsible for the maintenance and care of instruments, prepare and conduct regular performances, and participate in Michigan State Band Orchestra Association events.

      QUALIFICATIONS
      Required Education/Certification

      • Valid Secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate required
      • K-12 endorsement in music education with a JQ or equivalent

      Preferred Experience

      • Demonstrated successful student teaching experience; two years of experience teaching band preferred.
      • Possess the skills and desire to work in a collaborative team with others.
      • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the teacher’s role in a team environment.
      • Experience playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
      • Experience working with a variety of ensemble sizes preferred.
      • Brass specialist preferred.
      • Marching band experience preferred.
      • Jazz band experience preferred.
      • Middle school / beginning band experience preferred.
      • Knowledge of productivity applications such as Microsoft Office or G-Suite.
      • Ability to use computer technology for research, data management, communications, and other instruction.
      • Ability to use a PC or Mac in a networked environment to utilize the Internet and other electronic communication mechanisms.

      RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

      • Provides and coordinates the instructional program for students in the assigned area of responsibility, evaluates results on a continuous basis.
      • Specifically teaches 5th grade beginning brass ensembles, team teaches 6th grade band, and lead teaches 7th or 8th grade band on a rotating basis.
      • Serves as assistant for SHS Marching Band and directs SMS Jazz bands.
      • Assess students’ achievement and develop instructional strategies to meet individual educational needs of students in the assigned area of responsibility.
      • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students, considering such factors as physical, emotional and educational levels of development.
      • Participates as a part of Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings when necessary. Assists in the development and implementation of student IEP goals and instruction based on individual student needs.
      • Works cooperatively and communicates with District and constituent district staff, students, and parents/guardians.
      • Maintains accurate attendance records and appropriate records.
      • Participates in District level staff meetings, in-service activities, staff development/special programs, school improvement teams and planning committees as appropriate to the assignment.
      • Regularly documents student progress using assessment tools, monitoring through observations/evaluation and/or collecting data. Uses student progress data to improve instruction.
      • Supervises and implements instruction for students in class and in the community; directs the activities of teacher assistants in all areas of instruction as well as other activities.
      • Maintains accurate records in a manner consistent with state and federal laws as required by the District.
      • Establishes and maintains open communication with parents, staff, administration, and outside agencies.
      • Adheres to District health and safety rules, policies, and procedures.
      • Monitors student needs and implements programs.
      • Exhibits emotional stability, exercises good judgment, and makes decisions in accordance with board policies and administrative guidelines, with minimum supervision.
      • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES

      • Ability and knowledge of conducting large group performances and rehearsals.
      • Ability to program pedagogically appropriate musical literature and edit and arrange for students as necessary.
      • Ability to integrate technology into the everyday workflow.
      • Ability to utilize District technology and work to maintain proficiency.
      • Knowledge of current art instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
      • Knowledge of music curriculum and concepts.
      • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
      • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
      • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
      • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
      • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
      • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
      • Exemplary attendance is essential for this position. Employees must be physically present and mentally alert at all times.

      Work in standard office and school building environments requiring mobility, visual and auditory acuity, communication skills, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, problem-solving skills, adaptability, technology proficiency, physical stamina and environmental awareness

      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

      Directs teaching assistant(s) / paraeducators on a day-to-day basis.

      EQUIPMENT

      Use standard office equipment such as; personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone. Various items related to musical instruments and other equipment.

      TRAVEL

      Travel is required for teaching between Heritage School and Saline Middle School and to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

      WORK SCHEDULE

      Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Saline Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement (SEA)

      FLSA STATUS
      Exempt

      TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

      • Salary per the SEA
      • Additional compensation for leading extracurricular activities/events per the SEA Schedule B Article
      • Full benefit package as defined by the SEA
