      GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

      The teacher is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom. Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and efforts of the teacher. The teacher will direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music for the district. He or she will provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state and district requirements; will plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

      MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

      To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.       1. Aptitude: Thorough knowledge of performance skills on all wind and percussion instruments. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the area of vocal music. Thorough knowledge of traditional musical styles.
      • Have a working (mechanical and structural) knowledge of all standard wind and percussion instruments.
      • Be able to do fundamental maintenance on all standard wind and percussion instruments.
      • Have a fundamental operational knowledge of audio recording equipment.
      • Have a fundamental operational knowledge of sound reinforcement equipment.
      • Have a fundamental knowledge of other specific music performance related technology.
      • Be able to design performances and programs which highlight student ability as well as demonstrate growth of the music program.
      1. Instruction: Effective use of questioning and discussion techniques; engages students in the learning process; use of assessments to support student achievement; and demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.
      2. Classroom Environment: create an environment of respect and rapport; establish a culture for learning; manage classroom procedures and student behavior; and maintain an organized physical space.
      3. Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others’ ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit.
      4. Experience: Demonstrated ability to successfully work with adolescent students and the public in a school setting. Student teaching also applies.
      5. Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community. Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
      6. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
      7. Computer Skills: Proficiency in the usage of database software, internet software, and email. Ability to proficiently use the following programs: MS Word, Outlook, and Excel. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
      8. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, members of the community and others including vendors, law enforcement and other agencies. Ability to exercise good judgment and work ethics.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

      1. Must have a collegiate or postgraduate professional license or be eligible for a provisional license in music, Master’s Degree preferred.
      2. Teaching experience or its equivalency preferred.
      3. Two years band instruction experience preferred.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      1. Develop students’ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and cover appropriate band literature styles for school and competitive performances.
      2. Design and implement a wide variety of appropriate instructional activities for students of varying abilities and talents.
      3. Evaluate student achievement and adjust instruction accordingly.
      4. Teach a variety of vastly different skills on different instruments simultaneously.
      5. Organize and maintain a large inventory of equipment.
      6. Organize and maintain a large inventory of instructional materials and music library.
      7. Plan logistics and transportation for events during as well as outside of school per year.
      8. Plan and organize concerts and other public performances.
      9. Prepare and produce concert programs.
      10. Logistics: arrange venue, transport equipment.
      11. Organize and supervise large groups of students.
      12. Be responsible for budgeted and fundraised money accounts.
      13. Manage fundraising for music program.
      14. Maintain appropriate licenses as required.
      15. Comply with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
      16. Adhere to all teacher standards of ethics as established by the Virginia Department of Education.
      17. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

      SUPERVISOR : Principal

      FLSA: Exempt

      TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 11-month contract (240 days)

      Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
