      Program Objective/Scope

      The summer internship program within Research and Development at BD provides students with the opportunity to gain exposure to BD's process of designing and developing medical device products for different global markets! As a global organization, you may work within cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams while collaborating and supporting multiple internal partners and customers. The internship program will provide endless opportunities to engage with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who will provide informal mentoring and coaching.

      Throughout our summer internship, students will build an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific/engineering R&D environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver business presentations showcasing their work. BD's summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to the medical device industry and BD’s culture.

      We are recruiting for highly driven engineering students with a passion for technology and product development in the medical device industry.

      Project Areas

      BD develops a wide range of medical device products, including medication delivery, specimen collection, and diagnostic systems. All of these products are designed and tested in the Franklin Lakes, NJ and Sparks, MD facilities. Summer i nterns will work closely with a team of multidisciplinary engineers and use experimental and theoretical skillsets to conduct technical work applicable to multiple products and projects in the BD R&D portfolio.

      This R&D internship posting is specific to mechanical , materials , and systems product development . The R&D intern will be assigned an individual project to utilize scientific/engineering knowledge, technical fundamentals and skills to further develop their technical expertise in the R&D space. There are multiple internship positions available for the following projects:

      • Assemble electromechanical hardware; design and assemble test fixtures; execute tests, complete statistical analyses, and generate reports.

      • T est returned parts and write up investigational analyses; design test fixtures to simulate instrument workflows ; develop procedures, flow diagrams, and instructional materials for investigating returned parts from the field.

      • Perform various engineering studies of multiple subsystem functions; perform analyses including timing studies, control systems, and critical parameter identification and management; define and test workflow steps and exceptions to verify product workflows are implemented correctly .

      • Construct a fully interactive prototype for user studies; assist with user interaction design for the physical and graphical interface; conduct user research and data collection ; analyz e test results and generat e engineering design guidance, requirements, and reports.

      • Add SM and MDS projects

      Required qualifications:

      Education

      • BS and/or MS/PhD student pursuing a degree in any of the areas listed below:

      • Bioengineering

      • Biomedical Engineering

      • Human Factors Engineering

      • Materials Engineering

      • Mechanical Engineering

      • Systems Engineering

      • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction as to duration.

      Experience

      • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

      • Ability to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the 10 - 12-week summer internship period.

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Prior internship/co-op experience
