      • Position Summary
        • The Behavioral Health Education Specialist will play a key role in enhancing the knowledge and skills of staff in managing behavioral health needs in both inpatient and outpatient settings across the UNC Health Appalachian System. This position is primarily responsible for providing Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) training, conducting mental health first aid courses, and supporting various other educational and training initiatives. The Behavioral Health Education Specialist will collaborate with multiple departments to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary tools and strategies to provide compassionate, safe, and effective care to individuals with behavioral health needs. The Behavioral Health Education Specialist must possess the ability to design and develop engaging, relevant, and interactive educational content tailored to diverse learning styles and staff needs. This includes creating training materials, presentations, and resources that effectively communicate complex behavioral health concepts in an accessible and engaging manner. This position is housed in the Learning Center, but will work closely with all staff, including Director(s) of Nursing.

          Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Hiring compensation ranges from $28.00 - $44.80 / hour. This is a non-exempt position.

      • Position Qualifications
        • Minimum Education
            • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
        • Experience
            • Five years of experience in behavioral health, mental health crisis intervention, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
            • Experience in developing and delivering training or educational programs preferred.
        • Required Registration/License/Certification
            • Certified in Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) or the ability to achieve certification within 6 months of hire.
            • Certified in Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) Instructor status obtained within 1 year of hire.
            • Mental Health First Aid Instructor certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
            • Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
            • Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor status obtained withing 1 year of hire.
        • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
            • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
              Ability to lead training sessions and engage diverse audiences.
            • Knowledge of behavioral health protocols, crisis intervention strategies, and trauma-informed care principles.
            • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines.
            • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
        • Physical Demands
            • Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds

            • Manual dexterity and mobility
            • Prolonged, extensive or considerable sitting/standing/walking
            • Bending, squatting, twisting, turning
            • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less
        • Working Conditions
            • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases
            • Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment
            • Exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens
            • Exposed to unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces uneven surfaces), etc.
            • Handles emergency or crises
            • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays)
