The team you'll be part of
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.
The Data-Driven Software Systems Research team builds reliable, trustworthy and intuitive software systems. Research areas in the team include distributed computing, decentralized computing, AI/ML software systems, and privacy-preserving & trust insertion technologies. We envision a future where software systems blend the reliability of classic systems with the creativity of AI, ensuring both adaptability and robustness in real-time applications. We research new techniques to improve GenAI models in a more principled and predictable way, and develop design patterns for building reliable, GenAI-native software systems.
Our international team is based in Antwerp (Belgium) and Stuttgart (Germany).Qualifications
We are looking for a motivated research scientist with academic or applied research experience in one or more of the following areas of AI research:
In addition:
Location: The position is based in Antwerp (Belgium)
Responsibilities
Are you passionate about improving how software and software systems get built? Do you have a strong research background in machine learning and generative AI, with a proven publication track record? Do you love to write code, build systems, and validate your ideas through tangible prototypes? Then join us in building the next generation of trustworthy software systems at Nokia Bell Labs, the birthplace of software pearls like UNIX and C.

About the company
Nokia’s transition to a primary focus on telecommunications began in the 1990s. The first GSM call was made in 1991 using Nokia equipment. Rapid success in the mobile phone sector allowed Nokia to become by 1998, the best-selling mobile phone brand in the world. In 2003 Nokia introduced the first camera phone. In 2011, to address increasing competition from iOS and Android operating systems, Nokia entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft. In 2014 Nokia sold its mobile and devices division to Microsoft. The creation of Nokia Networks, following the buy-out of joint-venture partner Siemens in 2013, laid the foundation for Nokia’s transformation into primarily a network hardware and software provider. The 2015 acquisition of Franco-American telecommunications equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent greatly broadened the scope of Nokia’s portfolio and customer base. Additional acquisitions have positioned Nokia to be an industry leader in the transition to 5G wireless technology by offering the only end-to-end 5G network portfolio available on a global basis. In 2016 the Nokia brand re-entered the mobile handset market through a licensing agreement with HMD Global, allowing them to offer phones under the Nokia brand.
