The Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco (HRCSF) is a tenants rights non-profit serving tenants citywide since 1979, offering free counseling and organizing support for San Francisco tenants in all types of housing, including rent-control, public housing, and Section 8. Our purpose is to strengthen tenants rights, improve living conditions for renters, and preserve and expand affordable housing opportunities. Through our counseling program, we support more than 5,000 tenants a year, and our organizing program has helped build five tenant associations across the city since 2019.
Job Description: Bilingual Cantonese/English Tenant Organizer for Corporate Landlord Campaigns
Location: San Francisco
Schedule: 40 hours/week, flexible schedule required
Salary: $36.54/hour

Position Summary:
The Bilingual (Cantonese/English) Tenant Organizer focuses on building tenant power to stop displacement, limit rent increases, and improve conditions for tenants in San Francisco, particularly in buildings owned by corporate landlords. This role emphasizes the empowerment of tenants through organizing tenant associations, door-knocking, flyering, phone banking, running tenant meetings, and facilitating Know Your Rights trainings. The organizer is a part of the Corporate Landlord organizing team to coordinate advocacy efforts and provide critical English-to-Cantonese and Cantonese-to-English translations for tenant education and outreach materials.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct tenant education outreach with members in specific buildings facing threats of displacement, harassment and rent increase from corporate landlords.
Conduct regular meetings with members.
Build collective tenant power by training groups of tenants to use collective action to address their issues.
Educate tenants about their rights and other displacement issues.
Maintain accurate outreach materials, databases, spreadsheets, reporting, social media forms, and lists related to outreach work.
Translate tenant education materials, outreach flyers, and other resources between English and Cantonese to ensure accessibility for all tenants.
Meet regularly with the HRCSF organizing team for cross-program coordination.
Represent HRCSF in coalitions as needed.
Participate in HRCSF team and staff meetings.
Other administrative, organizational, and coalitional tasks as needed.
Essential Functions
Fluent - verbal and written - in Cantonese and English
Commitment to social and economic justice.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when needed.
Proficient in Google Drive such as Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, zoom, slack and a CRM systems
Knowledge of issues impacting tenants, immigrants, and people with low incomes
Currently living in San Francisco or if living outside the city have deep roots in SF
