      Influence and engage in natural resource management issues

      The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the protection, management and conservation of BC’s water, land, air and living resources. The Ministry mitigates and manages the risks and consequences from climate change, including developing plans to set and meet carbon pollution reduction targets. It also oversees provincial government assessment. Staff expertise in policy, science, research and analysis are central to supporting all Ministry responsibilities. Ministry legislation, regulation and public outreach activities ensure a safe and healthy environment for British Columbians, while supporting a strong, sustainable economy.

      This Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Biologist position is a provincial specialist in aquatic EIA and provides recommendations and guidance on monitoring, mitigative or remedial activities. In this role, you represent the Ministry, working with all levels of government, industry, land users, members of the public and the media, to lead education and awareness and promote environmental stewardship.

      Job Requirements:

      • Registered, or immediately eligible to register, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
      • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Environmental Studies or various multi-disciplinary resource management studies, or other related fields, and three (3) years of related experience; OR,
      • Other relevant combinations of education and experience such as a Master's Degree in a related field, plus two (2) years of related experience may be considered.


      Related Experience includes:

      • Experience managing complex and sensitive projects (project proposals, budget management, implementation, analysis and recommendations).
      • Experience managing and conducting environmental monitoring, assessments and reporting.
      • Experience liaising with environmental regulatory agencies and non-government agencies.
      • Experience conducting aquatic or marine environmental impact assessments and making recommendations.
      • Experience conducting scientific assessment and using data evaluation techniques including use of statistics in EIA data analysis.
      • Preference may be given to those with a high level of proficiency with data visualization, analysis and reporting on aquatic data for EIA purposes.


      Provisos:

      • Must be able to meet the transportation needs of the position, i.e. maintain a BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
      • Some field work required, occasionally in remote locations only accessed by foot, 4x4 or helicopter, to review resource development proposals. Field work may be strenuous.
      • May deal with confrontational situations with industry professionals, water suppliers, the general public, clients or stakeholders at public events or in the course of conducting site investigations, monitoring and compliance duties.
      • Must be physically able to conduct field work, including the ability to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
      • May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
      • Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
      • Willing and able to travel, occasionally outside of the Region to attend Ministry meetings.
      • Willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions.
      • Willing and able to work evenings, weekends and holidays, when required to represent the program at public meetings and events.

      There are currently two (2) permanent, full time positions available.
      One (1) position can be based in a Natural Resource Sector office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
      Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
      One (1) position can be located in Prince George, Kamloops, Penticton, or Williams Lake.
      Flexible work options are available; these positions may be able to work at least two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
      Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
