Biodiversity Informatics and Data Science 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in the UBC Biodiversity Research Centre (2024-2026)

The UBC Biodiversity Research Centre is made up of over 90 faculty members with interests in ecology, evolution, systematics, biodiversity and conservation. We invite applications for highly motivated postdoctoral fellows interested in biodiversity science with a particular emphasis on bioinformatics and/or data science. Preference will be given to candidates with bold ideas, demonstrated research ability, and strong communication skills. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct original research on core problems in biodiversity, foster interactions within the Centre, potentially assist in teaching an annual bioinformatics workshop and the development of an associated online resource, and take a leadership role in Centre activities including the annual retreat committee. Postdoctoral fellows funded by the Biodiversity Research Centre typically interact with several lab groups, and are a resource for graduate students with similar research interests. Candidates are welcome to contact potential collaborating labs in the Centre to inquire about current and potential research activities, but it is not necessary to apply to work with a specific faculty member.

Starting date: 1 May 2024 (negotiable)

Salary: $65,000 per year and benefits (including extended health and dental coverage)

      Research funds: $7,000 per year

Necessary qualifications: Candidates must have obtained, or expect to complete, their doctoral degree in ecology, evolution or a related field no later than May 1 2024, and be able to demonstrate a solid scientific background as evidenced by publication record and research statement. Preferred skills will include data science methods such as use of command line, high performance computation, data management skills, and programming in R. Individuals also must be within 5 years following the completion of their Ph.D. to be eligible (with allowances for career interruptions due to personal circumstances).

Selection criteria: The search committee will base their assessment on the quality of research accomplishments to date, the novelty and/ or potential impact of the proposed research, and the potential for the candidate to play a leadership role in our community, including maintaining high standards for ethical professional conduct.

To apply, please provide: a brief cover letter (1 page), curriculum vitae, 1-2 page research statement of overall scientific goals and interests, and the names and contact information for three referees. Please also include ½ page statement to expand on goals and experience related to service and community building in the academic context, and include how you will work to foster equity, diversity and inclusion in these activities.

The research statement is free form but it should describe both the general interests and specific projects that the candidate will engage in over the postdoc period.

Uploading instructions: Submit your application online at the UBC Careers webpage

Posting End Date: The posting will be removed on Monday, January 8, 2024. All materials must be received by 11:59PM on Sunday January 7, 2024 to ensure full consideration.
