The AstraZeneca Summer Internship Program

10–12-week development experience running through the summer months each year

Internships are meant to be a catalyst in helping students gain hands on learning & exposure to the career they’re pursuing.

Intern Eligibility Requirements:

• Students must be 18 years or older at time of hire; and not require sponsorship to work in the UK
• Students pursuing undergraduate, masters or doctoral degree.

A salary will be paid.

At AstraZeneca, we work continuously to identify new targets and biomarkers to bring better treatments to patients! In our early trials, we collect different types of data to gain a better understanding of the biology of the disease and its impact on the effectivity of the treatment, as well as how tumours may develop resistance to our treatments.

Although RNA-Seq is traditionally used for gene expression analysis, there is published work where attempts have been made to also get mutation calls from RNA-Seq data (Yizhak et al. 2019 (Science)). We would like to test one of the pipelines designed to call mutations from RNA-Seq data and compare the results with that coming from DNA-Seq data in some of our data. Additionaly, we would like to study the results to see if we can gain understanding on the mechanism of resistance to one of our treatments.

Primary duties of this position

• Configure and run sequencing processing pipeline.
• Analyze, compare and assess output from different data.
• Summarise and communicate results to Early Oncology stakeholders.

Learning objectives students can expect to gain

• Experience in processing of sequencing data.
• Understanding of mutation analysis output.
• Summarise and communicate results effectively to stakeholders.
