      Influence complex wildlife recovery initiatives

A career opportunity to influence BC’s conservation efforts in a significant way, this position works as part of a professional team charged with advancing an impactful conservation project being undertaken across B.C. The Provincial Caribou Recovery Program (Program) is viewed as a national leader in advancing caribou recovery and forging a new path forward to ensuring caribou remain on the Canadian landscape.

The Program sits within the Land Use Policy, Planning and Ecosystems Division (LUPPE) within the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) and provides provincial coordination, strategic direction, funding, and general oversight with the aim to recover caribou in B.C. The Program also works with other ministries, Nations, governments, and interested parties to develop, implement, and monitor management actions and provincial strategies to ensure we are meeting or exceeding provincial and federal population and habitat objectives.

      Position Overview

In the capacity of a Caribou Recovery Biologist, this position will be expected to provide professional and technical expertise to support the recovery and management of caribou and caribou habitat. Working closely with senior biologists and planners within the Northeast Region and across the provincial Program, key activities will include planning, implementation, and monitoring of caribou related initiatives such as, but not limited to: caribou habitat assessment, population monitoring and inventory (aerial or ground-based), habitat restoration, and supporting the implementation of intergovernmental agreements such as the proposed Boreal Caribou Protection and Recovery Plan.

This position may also provide subject matter expertise on herd planning initiatives in the broader context of land use planning, drafting of monitoring and technical reports, leading or supporting projects with both internal and external collaborators, and data entry and records management. While this position is focused on boreal caribou in Northeast BC, this position will also be expected to understand interactions with a diversity of wildlife species and habitats and may be asked to support projects pertaining to other species of management importance as well as other regions within BC. This position has both office and field-based components.
