- To follow Standard Operating Procedures and to participate in their regular review and update.
- To prepare, store and use reagents and consumables in a manner suitable for patient investigations.
- To become proficient in manual laboratory procedures such as precision pipetting, reagent preparation and complex analytical procedures.
- To undertake technical validation of complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols.
- To take appropriate action when there is a situation that may cause a service failure.
- To be able to calibrate, maintain, operate and troubleshoot expensive and complex hardware and software.
- To maintain and perform QC & EQA on assays, including point of care assays where appropriate.
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science ratified by the IBMS.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC).
- Evidence of continuing professional development.

Job summary
As a Biomedical Scientist in Blood Sciences the post holder is responsible for processing laboratory tests on patient samples in any of the sub-sections of the laboratory in rotation. The post holder will be qualified; HCPC registered. They must be able to apply the latest scientific knowledge coupled with the most up to date scientific methods. They must become competent to accurately and safely use and carry out routine maintenance and performance checks on complex and expensive analysers. They will work as a valued member of a team able to function with minimum supervision deputising for more senior staff as appropriate. They will support and participate in the Quality Management system.
Sub-sections are:
Sample Reception; sample receipt, ID and data entry
Biochemistry } Complex analysers for routine biochemistry and immunoassay, full
Haematology } blood counts, coagulation, haemoglobinopathy, microscopy, PCR
Immunology } and manual assays
Transfusion } Blood group and Antibody screens, Cross matching blood for transfusion
The successful applicant will be part of a team working in the Biochemistry section of this busy Blood Sciences Department in Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe Hospitals. This post will rotate between the two hospitals.
