      Biomedical Scientist - Haematology and Blood Transfusion - Band 6

      As a Biomedical Scientist you will be trained in all areas of Haematology Automation, Coagulation, Haemoglobinopathies and Blood Transfusion.

      The department is housed in a modern, purpose-built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy but friendly team. We currently have Beckman Coulter DxH900-2S with Cellavision Digital Morphology, ACL Top 750 Coagulation analysers, Benson's Viscometers for Plasma Viscosity, Sebia Capillarys 3 for HbA1c and Haemoglobinopathy Screening. We also provide Antenatal and Newborn Screening services for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia. The Blood Transfusion laboratory uses Immucor Neo Iris Blood Grouping analysers.

      The Blood Sciences department has a fully tracked automated system connecting Haematology, Coagulation and Chemistry analysers. We have accreditation by UKAS under ISO 15189 and are assessed for compliance by MHRA. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration and specialist portfolios.

      Main duties of the job

      Severn Pathology's aim is to provide a best in class, high quality, innovative, value for money pathology service that serves the needs of the healthcare market in the South West region. The laboratory facilities accommodate all pathology disciplines including the Blood Sciences, Bristol Genetics Laboratory, a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service and a combined Microbiology and Health Protection Agency service within one facility.

      The post holder under the direction of senior staff will be expected to:

      • Work as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service in Haematology and Blood Transfusion in accordance with National, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures on a rotational basis in all sections (Automation and Special Haematology and, Blood Transfusion) of the laboratory
      • Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department
      • Participate fully in the department's 24/7 rota system
      • Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      In this vital role, you will be expected:

      1. To work in accordance with the departmental Standard Operating Procedures, and assist in the development and review of these as required.
      2. To receive and analyse samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
      3. To assist in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
      4. To be responsible for the performance of compatibility testing and the issue of blood and blood products to patients in routine and emergency situations.
      5. To assist in the maintenance of the Hospital Blood Banks and the stock control of blood and blood products.
      6. To rotate into any area of the department as required.
      7. To participate fully in the departments 24/7 rota service.
      8. To prioritise the completion of urgent requests.
      9. To telephone important results to an appropriate person when necessary.
      10. To be responsible for their own work, under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
      11. To validate and release results to service users as required.
      12. To maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate.
      13. To prepare and ensure adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
      14. To use consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health and Safety policies
      15. To perform the routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions.
      16. To process internal and external quality control samples as required.
      17. To participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
      18. To participate in risk management of the department, including the reporting of adverse incidents.
      19. To participate in audit as required.
      20. To assist in research and development projects as required.
      21. To assist in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLAs, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
