      Job summary

      An opportunity exists for a Full Time, Permanent, HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections at The Whittington Health NHS Trust as a night workers -typically 3 nights per week to cover the weekend nights and any nights worked will attract additional payment via enhancement claims. There will be an initial requirement to work core hours for training and competency purposes. There will also be a requirement for some day shifts for training purposes following commencement of night work.

      Applications are invited from committed, motivated and enthusiastic individuals who wish to extend their skills and be instrumental in moving the department into an exciting future. The newly formed Essential Services Laboratory (ESL) at the Whittington hospital is undertaking significant upgrades to the facilities and equipment and is a fantastic opportunity for a BMS to be involved in verification of analysers and transfer of service from the current lab to the new ESL Laboratory.

      Applicants must be highly motivated, enthusiastic and should have flexible but committed approach to working. They will need to demonstrate good organisational skills and the ability to work without supervision in a team or lone working. The successful applicant MUST be HCPC registered and will be will be assigned to cover night shifts -typically 3 nights per week.

      Main duties of the job

      The successful applicant will be expected to work in on a rotational basis in both Haematology and Blood Transfusion and therefore post registration experience of working in a Haematology and Blood transfusion laboratory is ESSENTIAL. Previous experience of working with Sysmex and Ortho Analysers would be beneficial.

      The post holder will have opportunities for further development, with responsibilities for quality, H&S and training dependent on experience. The department has an excellent training programme to develop staff to realise their potential and career advancement. are comparable with agenda for change pay scales dependent on experience.

      1. Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update.
      2. Multidisciplinary working as required
      3. Techniques and testing that include automated analysers and manual methods.
      4. Communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct.
      5. Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
      6. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types.
      7. Operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
      8. Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
      9. Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system.
      10. Check reports for further action by clinical staff.
      11. Authorise reports as delegated within departmental policy.
      12. Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader if back-up stocks are low.
      13. To assist when required in the preparation of documentation for UKAS (ISO) accreditation.
      14. Able to solve complex problems within work area, but advise both clinicians and senior staff of any clinical and managerial issues
      15. Receipt, booking and processing of samples through the sample reception area when required.
