      Job summary

      An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, HCPC registered candidate to join the Mid Yorkshire Pathology Team as a Biomedical Scientist, working in the Haematology and Transfusion Department of Blood Sciences.

      Applications are sought from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists for a Biomedical Scientist role (AfC Band 5). The department would support the successful candidate in completing their IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

      Applications may also be considered for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist role for applicants who have yet to complete an IBMS Registration Portfolio but have a completed IBMS accredited degree.

      The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust covers three sites, Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury Hospitals. Haematology and Transfusion laboratories are present on the Pinderfields and Dewsbury sites.

      The post holder will be required to participate in a shift system which includes rotation across both the Pinderfields and Dewsbury sites.

      The department is under a managed service contract with Haematology and Transfusion equipment supplied by Sysmex and Biorad.

      Main duties of the job

      The candidate will carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work within Haematology and Transfusion, working within Health and Care Professions Council standards of proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.

      Duties include:-

      The evaluation and suitability assessment of samples for testing.

      Identification of abnormal results and to action appropriately.

      Carry out a range of specialist technical tasks using highly developed analytical skills.

      To follow the quality control procedures as per departmental protocols.

      Resolve analytical and technical problems and failures encountered while working independently.

      Interpret clinical information on request forms to ensure appropriate tests are carried out.

      Carry out technical validation of assays and investigations based on assessment of quality control results and to produce reports for clinical validation as appropriate.

      Work accurately and precisely in a conscientious, disciplined and flexible way.

      Maintain high technical standards and ensure that such areas in which you work are kept clean and tidy.

      Assist in senior staff in the evaluation of new methods and equipment.

      Conduct audit in line with UKAS guidelines and to participate in other internal and external audit activity as required.

      Work independently as required by managers, either as part of the out of hours service provision or during the normal working day.
