      Job Title: Biospecimen Coordinator


      Job Description

      This role involves coordinating specimen collection, processing, shipment, storage, and communication between clinical research project teams, the clinical lab, the clinical research unit, sponsors, and research labs. The Biospecimen Coordinator plays a central role in supporting cancer clinical research trials by managing various specimen types, including blood, bone marrow, urine, stool, and tissue biopsies.

      Responsibilities

      • Collect, track, process, and ship patient specimens for cancer clinical research trials.
      • Manage schedules for sample collection on studies as appropriate.
      • Process samples as required by each protocol.
      • Coordinate the transport of samples from the clinic to the research laboratory or from the research laboratory to an outside laboratory or sponsor.
      • Ship samples per protocol requirements.
      • Communicate within the biospecimen team and with research teams, responding to email queries and keeping track of status updates on patient visits.
      • Inform study teams when there are questions or obstacles in sample workflow and keep team members updated.
      • Perform laboratory and inventory management tasks, such as unpacking and accessioning research kits and laboratory supplies, monitoring inventory, recycling expired kits, and maintaining laboratory workspaces and storage spaces.
      • Maintain specimen inventory systems to ensure the status of each sample is known and documented, including entering kit prep and processing data in LabVantage LIMS system.
      • Record sample processing and shipping information in Microsoft Excel and retrieve research study information from EPIC.

      Essential Skills

      • High School Diploma with 3+ years of hands-on experience in a related role within a hospital setting.
      • Associates Degree with 1+ year of hands-on experience in a related role within a hospital setting (biospecimen processing, sample processing, phlebotomy, vet tech).
      • BS degree with relevant experience is also considered, especially for those looking to gain experience before entering medical school.
      • Experience handling biospecimen samples (blood, urine, etc.) in a clinical setting.
      • Experience in preparing and processing samples, including packing and shipping.

      Additional Skills & Qualifications

      • Proficiency with LabVantage LIMS system and Microsoft Excel.
      • Ability to manage laboratory and inventory tasks efficiently.
      • Strong organizational skills to maintain laboratory workspaces and storage spaces.

      Work Environment

      The position is primarily based in the laboratory at the Perelman Cancer Center, with occasional trips to the hospital (connected by a bridge) for picking up and dropping off samples. The role may also require visits to another lab on campus from time to time.

      Pay and Benefits

      The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr.
