Job summary
There is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join the ENT department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is the largest multi-site Trust in the UK. The ENT Department works across four sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and Solihull Hospital (SH).
The Birmingham Thyroid Surgery Fellowship provides an excellent opportunity to work within a high-volume supra-regional university teaching hospital with a multidisciplinary focus. Our aim is to provide comprehensive training in the surgical management of a wide range of thyroid and parathyroid conditions. The fellowship offers exposure to the medical and surgical management of malignant and benign thyroid cases, including retrosternal disease. In addition, the ENT department provides a large volume of parathyroid operations, including primary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism. Outpatient commitments include specialist thyroid clinics, thyroid oncology clinic and MTC clinic. Our department has close connections with University of Birmingham. From an academic perspective, the department is currently involved in national clinical trials and there is plenty of opportunity to undertake research during the fellowship.
Main duties of the job
The ENT Department has 30 full time equivalent consultants and 3 part time consultants. Within the ENT department at UHB, there are currently 9 consultants specialising in Head & Neck and thyroid surgery. The pan-Birmingham Head & Neck and thyroid MDT is one of the largest MDTs in the country. The department performs around 500 thyroid/parathyroid operations per year.
The middle grade tier within the department consists of 7 middle grade doctors at the HGS site, including the Thyroid Fellow, 3 Associate Specialists, 3 residents,2 speciality doctors and 1 Medical Training Initiative (MTI). At the QEHB site there are 8 middle grades, including 3 fellows (Head & Neck, Otology/Skull base and Rhinology/Anterior Skull base) and 5 residents. There are 6 tier one doctors at the HGS site and 8 at the QEHB site.
The appointee will be expected to undertake cross-site working with a formal job plan, with elective work based at QEHB and on call work based at HGS. All major head and neck elective theatre sessions will be at QE Hospital, and some day case procedures at the new Heartlands treatment centre.

About the company
National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
