      Job Summary: Identifies and generate reports for all patients who have delivered newborns the previous day. Maintain an in-depth knowledge of Massachusetts State mandated rules and regulations governing the preparation of birth certificates and paternity acknowledgments. Utilize independent judgement in dail decision-making practices. Demonstrates the capacity to provide empathy and to use tact in different interpersonal situations. Prioritize the daily operation of the Birth Registration department in order to provide optimal, timely services to our customers. Give attention to detail and is able to manipulate daily utilizing computer equipment.

      Essential Responsibilities:
      1. Identifies patients who have delivered newborns the previous day. Compile and assemble a variety of reports containing legal, clinical and statistical information. Prioritize work plans and coordinate resources necessary to complete the birth certificate registration Process.
      2. Telephonic interviewing of patients. Explaining complex rules and regulations governing birth certificates registration. These rules and regulations set by the Department of Vital Records and statistic may include paternity acknowledgements, affidavits of non-paternity and federal documents.
      3. Following Massachusetts State mandated guidelines interprets data provided by patients and clinicians. This data includes educational and clinical background, prenatal behavior patterns and ethnic origins.
      4. Identify and prepare legal affidavits and notification letters for appropriate patients. Acts as Notary Public witnessing signatures and certifying legal documents.
      5. Coordinates availability of specific interpreters for patients with language barriers. Works collaboratively with nursing staff and social services to ensure patients needs are met.
      Required Qualifications:
      1. High School diploma or GED required.
      2. 0-1 years related work experience required.
      3. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

      Physical Nature of the Job:
      Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally The Antepartum/Postpartum Unit at BIDMC is a comprehensive unit made up of 62 private rooms split into 3 units spread over 2 floors. The two postpartum units are 6 Stoneman and 6 Feldberg (18 beds and 21 beds). Al three floors share a level 1 newborn nursery split into two sides. The antepartum unit (23 beds) is located on 5 Feldberg. The staff is one staff for all three units, and anyone joining the team will be oriented and expected to work in all three areas. Cardiac telemetry monitoring is used when needed, and is located on two of the three floors. In addition, the antepartum unit and one of the postpartum units utilizes a centralized fetal monitoring system linked to Labor and Delivery.
