      Department Summary:

      MITRE’s BlueTech Lab (bluetech.mitre.org) is a testing facility located in Bedford, Massachusetts that enables the regional BlueTech innovation community to rapidly prototype new technology quickly and safely.

      Featuring one of the largest and longest tanks in the region (106’ x 40’ x 19’7″), with a capacity of 621,000 gallons—the BlueTech Lab’s test tank accommodates the use of unmanned undersea and surface vehicles in a large, controlled space and provides the ability to test communication and acoustic sensing systems at lower transmission frequencies and larger signal pulse-widths than other facilities. The MITRE BlueTech Lab’s test tank is open for use by research and industry partners today, and the enhanced lab facility will be completed in 2023.

      We are seeking a BlueTech Lab Engineering Technician to oversee the hands-on operation of a premier underwater test facility located in Bedford, MA. As a BlueTech Lab Engineering Technician, you will play a key role in helping develop capabilities via hardware lab testing and evaluation. The candidate will work with teams of multi-disciplinary engineers in the development and testing of proof-of-concept prototypes and systems in an open laboratory environment. You will provide technical support to a variety of government and internal projects in the areas of uncrewed undersea vehicles (UUV), uncrewed surface vehicles (USV), underwater acoustic communications and sensing. Candidates should have a strong interest in performing hands-on measurements in a laboratory setting and experience with software interfaces for control of laboratory equipment.

      Roles and Responsibilities:

      • Work directly with internal engineers and external partners to develop and conduct in-water testing of various systems.
      • Coordinate with Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) and Facilities organizations to ensure all safety measures and appropriate tank maintenance is being met.
      • Control lab test equipment including signal generators, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, overhead and platform cranes.
      • Create test procedures and perform calibrated acoustic measurements using data acquisition systems.
      • Assist in the design, fabrication, and implementation of test fixtures.
      • Work independently to maintain lab specific systems.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      • Ability to obtain and maintain at least a Secret security clearance which requires US citizenship.
      • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in AED/CPR and Crane Operation
      • Typically requires a minimum of 4 - 6 years of related experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent in education, or 3 years’ experience with an Associate degree, or 2 years’ experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
      • Proactive self-starter with strong analytical, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Analytical use of spreadsheet and/or database software, including Microsoft Excel.
      • Degree in Electrical/Electronics engineering technology (EET) or related discipline.
      • Experience using software tools such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python for data acquisition.
      • Experience with laboratory management, including equipment maintenance and calibration, designing tests, and conducting electrical and acoustical measurements.
      • Experience with the operation, repair, and calibration of lab equipment such as signal analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, and similar test equipment. Working knowledge of signal processing concepts in time and frequency.
      • Understanding of basic acoustic measurement theory and test tank operations.
