      The Border Force Officer Recruit Training (BFORT) program aims to provide the Australian Border Force (ABF) with an operational law enforcement focussed workforce, which is trained and equipped to undertake functions across the entire border continuum. Operating under a command and control model, the mission of the ABF is to protect Australia's border and enable legitimate travel and trade. The program equips BFORT recruits with skills and knowledge to enable them to be disciplined, multi-skilled, team oriented, mobile and deployable to the operational needs of the ABF.

      Our ideal candidate:

      The ABF are seeking individuals who can demonstrate the following capabilities:

      • Maintain exemplary grooming and appearance standards in line with the ABF Uniform Dress and Appearance Standards Policy
      • Undertake research that utilises critical thinking skills to analyse issues and to develop reasoned conclusions to apply findings
      • Complete tasks within set timeframes, monitor own progress and seek feedback on results
      • Facilitate positive interactions with clients, peers and stakeholders to achieve results by being respectful of differences in culture, language, gender and religion
      • Display integrity while demonstrating sound judgement and decision making.

      Duties and responsibilities:

      The Border Force Officer Recruit Trainee (BFORT) will be required to:

      • Be reliable in committing to undertake full-time training/work in an ongoing capacity and understand the 12 month training program involves passing challenging examinations

      • Demonstrate personal accountability when preparing for exams that test competency retention which contributes to graduation as a BFORT

      • Maintain exemplary grooming and understand the ABF's public image is a critical component of our identity, brand and reputation as a professional law enforcement agency

      • Attend classroom training in a range of locations, on the job training and education in a series of work placements in office hours and shift-work environments, including weekend, public holiday periods and night shifts

      • Work with teams collaboratively in a dynamic border protection environments processing passengers at air and sea ports, including interacting with and questioning travellers/detainees and other persons of diverse backgrounds

      • Use technology, equipment and vehicles, x-ray machines, electronic substance and trace detection testing equipment tools, examination of cargo, mail, baggage, driving official vehicles and embarking and disembarking vessels at berths and at sea.

      Additional information:

      These roles "may" require:

      • Interstate travel
      • Varied hours of work including weekends, public holidays, Christmas holiday period and shift work
      • Travelling to and from different locations by all modes of transport
      • Working in challenging environmental conditions, including remote areas.

      Mandatory requirements are required under legislation or policy and include:

      • Full vaccination, including a booster shot
      • A minimum of Baseline (Protected) level security clearance
      • Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC)
      • Use of Force (medical and fitness)
      • Recruits must successfully complete all elements of the training and probationary requirements.

      Evidence of heritage

      Shortlisted applicants will be required to provide confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

      A confirmation must stipulate that a person:

      • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; and
      • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and
      • is accepted as such by the community in which they live, or formerly lived.

      Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage can be provided by a wide range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and bodies, and commonly include, but are not limited to, the following:

      • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Councils;
      • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations can be incorporated under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006, the Corporations Act 2001, or other states and territory legislation);
      • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical services.

      The Selection process for this role will be conducted as below:

      Stage One Assessment - Candidates will be invited to complete an online capability assessment and if the minimum selection requirements are met will progress to the next stage.

      Stage Two Assessment - Candidates will be invited to complete an online interview with work sample test.

      Eligibility:

      To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

      The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
