We are currently accepting applications for a Commercial Plumbing & UDC Inspector in our Community Development Department! This position is responsible for inspection and enforcement of state and local plumbing, building, heating, and electrical codes and other codes and ordinances as assigned.

      Candidates must be licensed by the State of Wisconsin as a Journeyman Plumber (at a minimum) and possess or obtain (within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License. Candidates must also possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain the following certifications: UDC Building Inspector, UDC HVAC Inspector, UDC Plumbing Inspector, and UDC Electrical Inspector. State of Wisconsin Master Plumber licensure or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire is preferred.

      JOB DESCRIPTION

      POSITION SCOPE

      Utilizing education, experience, and a thorough working knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices involved in plumbing, building construction, heating and electrical systems. This position is responsible, under supervision, for inspection and enforcement of state and local plumbing, building, heating, and electrical codes and other codes and ordinances as assigned. A general knowledge and understanding of the zoning code and other development-related ordinances is required, and assisting in the enforcement of them may also be assigned.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

      Conducts inspections of plumbing systems during and after construction to determine conformity with legally prescribed standards.


      Utilizes appropriate enforcement procedures to secure compliance where discrepancies with codes exist.

      Assists in the inspection, enforcement, and administration of the plumbing, heating, electrical, building, and zoning codes, and any other assigned ordinances or codes.

      Examines plumbing, heating, and building plans to determine compliance with applicable plumbing, heating, and building codes. Files plans as necessary.

      Issues plumbing, heating, electrical, and building permits; maintains records of permits, violations, inspections, etc., necessary to determine compliance with all codes.

      Prepares correspondence and reports.

      Assists contractors, homeowners, designers, municipal departments, and others in interpreting codes and ordinances. Gives technical advice in removing violations.

      Assists in the development and amendment of local codes.


      Attends institutes and training seminars as required to maintain state certification and a high level of knowledge in the specific areas of concern.

      Acquires and maintains computer skills needed to operate the Division's permitting and inspection computer system.

      Assists inspectors in other specialized fields by making casual observations and reporting apparent code violations to the appropriate inspector for follow-up.

      Works closely with other City departments in enforcing and implementing other related codes and ordinances.

      Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.

      Must be able to take direction and work well with others.

      Must be able to concentrate and perform accurately.


      Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.


      Must be able to back-up fellow co-workers.

      NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

      Performs related duties as required.


      EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS


      Current State of Wisconsin licensure as a Journeyman Plumber is required. State of Wisconsin Master Plumber licensure or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire is preferred.


      Must possess or obtain (within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.

      Must possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain UDC Building Inspector certification.

      Must possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain UDC HVAC Inspector certification.

      Must possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain UDC Plumbing Inspector certification.

      Must possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain UDC Electrical Inspector certification.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT

      Work is performed in office setting and outdoors visiting construction sites, where hazard of dangerous debris is present. May include bending, stooping, and lifting less than 50 pounds.
