      Base salary hiring ranges
      Building Inspector I: $44,447 to $51,114
      Building Inspector II: $52,567 to $60,452
      Building Inspector III: $57,165 to $65,740

      Job Description

      The Building Inspector I, II, and III positions are responsible for the inspection of residential and commercial construction sites for compliance with structural, mechanical (heating, ventilation, air conditioning), electrical, plumbing, and erosion control code and ordinance requirements, and applicable approved plans.


      Essential Duties
      • Conducting field inspections of residential and commercial buildings and structures
      • Preparing reports, forms, citations, and other code compliance information, and documenting in the department databases
      • Responding to inquiries and concerns received from contractors, homeowners, and other customers pertinent to building construction and erosion control code compliance and corrective actions
      • Performing other duties that support the objectives of the Inspections Section
      • Assisting lower-level personnel with the interpretation of applicable codes, ordinances, and laws, and the inspection of construction sites (BUILDING INSPECTOR III ONLY)

      Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

      Minimum Qualifications

      Building Inspector I - Grade B22(2)
      • High School Diploma or G.E.D, and two (2) years of related construction or trades experience;
      • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position;
      • Valid Driver’s License from the state of residency;
      • NPDES Level 1B Erosion Control Inspector certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment;
      • Must successfully obtain one (1) ICC or BOAG inspector certification according to the area of assignment within one (1) year of employment.

      Building Inspector II - Grade B24(2)
      • High School Diploma or G.E.D, and three (3) years of related construction or trades experience to include one (1) year of code enforcement/inspection experience;
      • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position;
      • Valid Driver’s License from the state of residency;
      • NPDES Level 1B Erosion Control Inspector certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment;
      • Must have one (1) ICC or BOAG inspector certification according to the area of assignment.

      Building Inspector III - Grade B25(2)
      • High School Diploma or G.E.D, and five (5) years of related construction or trades experience to include three (3) years of code enforcement/inspection experience;
      • competently perform the essential duties of the position;
      • Valid Driver’s License from the state of residency;
      • NPDES Level 1B Erosion Control Inspector certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment;
      • Must have one (1) ICC or BOAG Certification according to area of assignment;
      • Must have the ICC Residential Combination Inspector certification or equivalent BOAG Inspector Certification or possess a State of Georgia contractor license and successfully obtain an ICC Residential Combination Inspector certification or equivalent within two (2) years of employment;
      • Must have the ICC Commercial Building Inspector or equivalent BOAG Inspector certification or possess a State of Georgia contractor license and successfully obtain one (1) ICC or equivalent BOAG certification according to area of assignment within one (1) year of employment.
