      Building Inspector I:

      $26.11 - $31.74 Hourly / $2,088.80 – $2,539.20 Bi-Weekly / $54,308.80 - $66,019.20 Annually

      Building Inspector II:

      $28.82 - $35.03 Hourly / $2,305.60 - $2,802.40 Bi-Weekly / $59,945.60 - $72,862.40 Annually

      Building Inspector III:

      $31.82 - $38.67 Hourly / $2,545.60 - $3,093.60 Bi-Weekly / $66,185.60 - $80,433.60 Annually


      Description:

      Inspects buildings and structures in all stages of construction, or assigned area of specialty, for compliance with governing laws, local ordinances, and adopted state and model codes and standards. Takes appropriate action to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and laws. Examines building plans and specifications for compliance with uniform electrical, plumbing, mechanical and building codes; enforces code compliance as necessary. Performs related duties as required.


      Ideal Candidate:

      The ideal candidate will have current ICC Certifications, as well as experience with plans examining and field inspections. The individual will also have thorough knowledge of acceptable standards, techniques and practices used in residential, commercial, and industrial properties, in addition to Federal, State, County, Department, and Division laws, rules, codes, policies and procedures governing inspections. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have two (2) years of experience as an inspector or a journeyman in the building trades or building construction.


      • Inspects complex structural and architectural systems, in varying states, for compliance with codes or standards as applied to residential, commercial or industrial buildings.

      • Reviews plans and related documents for residential additions, alterations, and remodels, including calculations for compliance with Tehama County ordinances and laws.

      • Explains codes and ordinance requirements for proper installation of equipment, materials and systems to county personnel, builders, architects, contractors, and the public.

      • Issues written Notices of Violation when necessary.

      • Assists and advises the public in matters relating to construction and code requirements. Processes applications and issues building permits and collects fees.

      • Keeps informed of new and changing laws, codes and regulations affecting county code enforcement and new building construction methods and materials.

      • Prepares and maintains required inspection records and reports, keeps accurate support files. Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from the public and support staff regarding permit activity, complex inspections, and requirements.

      • Issues gas and electrical tags, occupancy certificates, etc.

      • Performs related work as required.

      Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

      • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level courses in building code, engineering and/or architecture. An AA degree in Building Inspection Technology is highly desirable.
      In addition to:


      Building Inspector I: Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through two (2) years of experience as an inspector or a journeyman in the building trades or building construction. Certification as an inspector by a nationally recognized organization, such as the International Code Council (ICC), is preferred.

      Special Requirements:

      Possess or obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, at least one (1) current ICC certificate from the “Residential Inspector” Series or “Commercial Inspector” Series.


      Building Inspector II: Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through three (3) years as an inspector or a journeyman in the major building trades.

      Special Requirements:

      Must possess, at the time of hire, at least two (2) current ICC certificates from the “Residential Inspector” Series, “Commercial Inspector” Series, or “Plans Examiner” Series.



      Building Inspector III: Generalist Inspector, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical Specialist: Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities typically acquired through four (4) years as an inspector or a journeyman in the major construction trades, one year of which has been in a local governmental agency in the appropriate technical specialty.

      Special Requirements:

      Must possess at least four (4) current ICC certificates from the “Residential Inspector” Series, “Commercial Inspector” Series, or “Plans Examiner” Series, including certificates in Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical. A Plans Examiner certificate is desirable.


      LICENSES :

      Must possess a valid California driver’s license.

      The department currently has one (1) vacancy.

      In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Building Inspector I/II/III, as well as subsequent vacancies, which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
