      POSITION SUMMARY: Under direct supervision of the Transit Director, the bus operator is responsible for operating buses in a safe and effective manner. In addition, the bus operator is responsible for providing for the safety and well-being of the passengers.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      1. Provide safe and efficient transportation for the patrons of the Transit Department

      a. Operate the bus on scheduled route.

      b. Pick up patrons on dispatched requests for transportation

      c. Respond to medical emergencies and injuries to passengers in a manner consistent with the policies and procedures of the Transit Department.

      2. Maintain buses and vans

      a. Conduct and document a thorough pre/post trip inspection of the vehicle prior to and end of operation on a daily basis.

      b. Close all windows and lock all doors at end of run.

      c. Fuel your assigned vehicle when required.

      d. Able to use and navigate mobile data computer.

      e. Check for damage to the vehicle.

      f. Maintain a clean vehicle inside and out daily, washing of the vehicle weekly or as instructed.

      3. Service Objective-responsibility to citizen

      a. Be courteous and respectful.

      b. Be responsive to citizen requests, only when applicable and permitted through the dispatching office.

      4. Supportive work environment

      a. Treat all other employees with respect.

      b. Promote a positive work environment.

      c. Acquire good communication by keeping self and others informed of work issues and program by maintaining quality communication and work to resolve issues of conflicting personalities and needs.

      d. Attend transit staff meetings.

      e. Maintain well-groomed appearances by wearing proper clothing attire.

      f. Keep necessary records of log sheets, demographics, and other documentation as required through the transit office.

      REPORTS TO: The Transit Bus Operators will report directly to the Transit Director.

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires extended period of operating the transit passenger vehicles. The bus operator must load and unload wheelchair passengers, as well as, assist each passenger into and out of vehicle as needed or requested. The work consists of bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling, frequently lifting objects up to 24 lbs., and sitting for extended periods of time.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in the field, operating the bus, regardless of weather conditions (proper procedures will be considered according to weather conditions). The bus operator is exposed to noise, fumes, road vibration, and other unforeseen causes. Work is also performed at the Transit Program Garage, this includes the up keep of vehicles (daily interior and exterior cleaning and weekly washing, or as instructed). The vehicle that you are assigned to is your responsibility, you are required to keep it maintained and presentable at all times.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      • High School Diploma or GED
      • Six (6) months of on-the-job training in a Transit Department or six (6) months experience operating public transportation vehicles or school buses.
      • Certifications: valid Oklahoma Driver’s License Class D
      • Equipment used: Tribal buses/vans and two-way radio.
      • Thorough knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of the transit department buses and vans.
      • Thorough knowledge of the safety standards and practices of the operations of the tribe’s buses and vans.
      • Ability to effectively use oral, written, and computerized communication in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
      • Ability to learn and implement tribal procedures, regulations, and requirements with respect to public, safety, operations, and organizations.
      • Additional training and meetings will be conducted throughout the fiscal year to improve knowledge and ability to perform job duties and functions well. Travel may be in state, out of state, local, or at the tribes transit-based facility.
      • Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
