      As an Intern , you can expect to:

      • Join Southwest as a S ummer 202 4 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from May 21 to August 9 , 2024 .

      • Work onsite at our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX.

      • Workplace flexibility for 50% of the time is typically available, but interns are expected to be onsite for Intern- related events .

      • Dedicate 40 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks.

      • Receive hourly pay of $22 and receive a one-time $1,000 stipend on your first paycheck .

      • Receive free, unlimited space available travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel) .

      • Interns will be provided any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

      Southwest Airlines' Analytics Internships span across several different Teams within department(s). Interns may be asked to support a variety of projects within one or more of the following Teams:

      C ustomer Experience Command Center Analytics:

      The Customer Engagement Intelligence Team is dedicated to creating performance insights that drive efficiency. Their primary responsibility lies in developing accurate forecasts, conducting workforce planning, and utilizing workforce management tools and analytics to monitor demand and optimize staffing levels. Their expertise and efforts enable us to achieve optimal balance, coverage, and productivity throughout our workforce, ultimately leading to improved overall performance.

      Duties & Responsibilities :

      The duties and responsibilities of the Reporting and Analytics Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • Collect data from a variety of sources .

      • Work closely with Customer Engagement Intelligence Analyst to produce and communicate data analyses.

      • Work closely with Technology and other departments.

      • Facilitates production releases for applications used by Customer Engagement .

      • Documents and analyzes required information and data.

      • Identifies and forecasts demand trends, productivity, and backlog data through the production of reports.

      Ground Operations Risk Management Analytics:

      The Ground Ops Risk Management and Safety Assurance Team supports the largest department in the Company by providing Safety and compliance analysis and reporting to all 100+ Stations in our operation. The Team is responsible for monitoring risk, analyzing safety and compliance trends, and administering the departmental safety auditing program.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      The duties and responsibilities of the Risk Management and Safety Assurance Analytics Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • Analyzing data to draw conclusions and providing recommendations to Leadership for performance improvement

      • Ad hoc analysis may also be requested to help support internal change, projects and priorities

      Network Operations Control Analytics:

      The Analytics Team transforms disparate sources of data into descriptive, diagnostic, and predictive insights for various NOC operating groups and leaders. The team consists of analysts, business consultants, big data analysts, and data scientists.

      Duties & Responsibilities:

      The duties and responsibilities of the NOC Analyst Inte rn may include but are not limited to:

      • Gather data from various sources, including but not limited to, and Southwest Database s

      • Research and verify third party data integrity

      • Scrub/format data and translate into system compatible format

      • Support Stakeholder meeting requests and needs

      • Leveraging data to perform post-ops analysis of operational disruption events, routine reporting, and using data to tell a story

      • Participate in ad hoc projects/analytics requests

      Network Operations Control Product Analytics:

      This Team is composed of Product Managers and Analysts that work together to build products, integrate with vendor solutions, and define the vision and strategy for the Network Operations Control department at Southwest Airlines. Our goal is to modernize the airline with new technology and products that enable the growth of Southwest Airlines.

      Duties & Responsibilities:

      The duties and responsibilities of the NOC Product Analyst Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • Apply knowledge and skills of analysis, business processes, tools, domains, project methodologies, requirements definitions, and testing to solve a range of problems

      • Partner with Product Managers to refine epics into features, prioritize and sequence them on the PI Roadmap, and work with Product Owners translate features into stories that will enable the Product Vision

      • Participate in PI Planning and other agile ceremonies

      • Partner with other Technology team members to provide advice or solutions within area of expertise

      • Stay informed about current developments within expertise

      • Identify problems, perform root cause analysis, investigate information, perform impact analysis, and formulate and execute plans to develop solutions

      • Identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems

      • Express ideas as well as business or technical requirements clearly and concisely in writing using appropriate levels of summary and synthesis

      • Facilitate the creation and maintenance of proper product documentation

      • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders

      Operations Strategic Analytics:

      As a member of the Ops Performance & Design Department, the Ops Strategic Analytics Intern is responsible for supporting the strategy, analysis, design, and implementation of operational performance initiatives that aim to achieve positive and sustainable results. Supports Operations, Commercial, and Finance departments to align People, assets, and the network to improve processes, reduce cost and complexity, and enable and maximize revenue opportunities. Ensures the Operations perspective is understood and as part of Enterprise decisions.

      Duties and Responsibilities :

      The duties and responsibilities of the Ops Strategic Analytics Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • Contribute to discussions on strategies and business insights from qualitative and quantitative information

      • Distills data sets into simple summaries that can be understood by all levels of Leadership Identifies opportunities through analysis that drive business decisions and long-term strategy

      • Develop well-written presentations that are clear and convey key information, including business cases, roadmaps and other materials that support alignment efforts

      • Support special programs and initiatives that arise from unique operational challenges.

      • Build confidence and sustain trusted relationships with key stakeholders

      Real Estate Analytics:

      Southwest's Real Estate function manages the Company's airport and facility assets, including long-term airport and facilities planning and development, design and construction, and facility management, maintenance, and security.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      The duties and responsibilities of the Real Estate Analytics Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • Assisting in data preparation

      • Traveling to collect data, verify field information, and perform time motion studies

      • Analyzing forecasted Southwest Airlines Real Estate opportunities, lease studies and built environments

      • Performing quality assurance on dashboards and report s

      Sales Analytics:

      The Analytics Team leads account level insights for Southwest Business. This Team is responsible for assisting account managers with data analysis, insights, and recommendations to drive increased revenue.

      Duties and Responsibilities :

      The duties and responsibilities of the Sales A na lytics Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • Gather data from various sources, including but not limited to, Account Managers, Salesforce, and Southwest Databases

      • Research and verify third party data integrity

      • Scrub/format data and translate into system compatible format

      • Support Account Managers through providing analysis and recommendation based on the data

      • Leveraging Salesforce to update account details, upload data, and manage tasks

      • Participate in ad hoc projects/analytics requests

      • Provide customized reporting and recommendations in support of ongoing business decisions or initiatives

      • Develop presentations with analytical results into presentable formats for all levels of management

      SIMS Analytics:
      The Intern will support the Safety Information Management Systems (SIMS) Team with generation of technology requirements, database management, and interfacing with the Technology Department.

      Duties & Responsibilities:

      The duties and responsibilities of the SIMS Data Analytics Intern may include but are not limited to:

      • The support and implementation of the Safety Management System at Southwest Airlines through data analysis and procedure development.

      • Researching and collecting data from a variety of resources to meet standard and ad hoc analysis.

      • Providing trending, forecasting, reporting and visualization of Safety, operational and financial data to leadership

      • Assisting with the development and acceptance testing of existing Safety and Security software, including audit management tools and cloud-based risk management solutions.

      • Performing analysis and research to define project goals, reporting infrastructure and products/projects.

      • Use problem solving skills to research, analyze and recommend alternative actions for problem resolution.

      • Use ETL tools such as Alteryx and visualization tools such as Tableau to collect and communicate safety information to leadership

      Basic Qualifications:

      • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required

      • Must be at least 18 years of age.

      • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

      • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.

      • This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship now or in the future.

      Education:

      • Must be progressing towards degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Finance, Economics, Operations Research, Statistics, Information Technology, Business, Business Analytics , Marketing , Aviation , or related field.

      • Minimum S ophomore status. May not have an undergraduate graduation date of May 2024 or prior, unless already enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at time of application.

      • Junior status and above preferred

      • To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by your university at the time of application

      • Minimum 2.5 or above cumulative GPA at the time of application

      Experience:

      • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred

      • Proficiency in Excel 's data manipulation functions (Pivot tables, VLOOKUP, graphing, etc.) is strongly preferred

      • Experience with Salesforce, data analytics, SQL, Tableau, Python and Alteryx preferred

      • Able to build and deliver PowerPoint presentations

      • Able to effectively communicate in writing the results of their work

      • Experience using forecasting software, forecasting models is preferred

      • Classroom and/or industry experience using Access, programming languages VBA and/or SQL or other database management tools or data packages preferred

      Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

      • Problem solving and analytical background required

      • Basic understanding of root cause and/or trend analysis

      • Ability to make decisions in an ambiguous environment

      • Ability to stay organized, manage multiple and concurrent complex assignments and analyses in a fast-pace environment with little supervision

      • Demonstrates ability to interpret data, draw implications and modify approach

      • Uses data to synthesize action plan and can clearly communicate an interpretation of data to others

      • Routinely goes beyond simple numerical checks in quality control

      • Maintains high quality even in complex situations with tight deadlines

      • Consistently takes big picture into account in decision stream and makes right decision

      • Pursues changes to operational or analytical status quo that serve to increase efficiency and/or generate revenue ( e.g. developing automation, creating new reporting, etc.)

      • Prioritizes own work and actively makes trade-offs to move items with highest revenue opportunity or greatest sense of urgency to prime importance

      • Identifies project/analysis opportunities and is able to prioritize in context of other work

      • Works well in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous and compassionate

      • Works well independently as well as in a team environment in professional manner

      • Involvement in campus organizations, clubs, or extracurricular activities preferred

      • Basic knowledge of airline metrics is a plus
