      Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service standards and specifications.

      Either 1. One year of experience as an emergency responder in a career fire department; or

      2. two years of experience as an emergency responder in a volunteer fire department; or

      3. 60 semester credit hours in fire protection, fire prevention, fire science or fire safety.

      At the time of interview, candidates must possess a recognized First Aid and CPR (D) certification, HAZMAT Technician, and Firefighter 1 Certification. Employees require physical fitness level essential to climb stairs, function on ladders, enter into confined spaces, operate in hazardous environments and at differing heights while wearing various personal protective equipment such as respirators, up to and including self-contained breathing apparatus and full body chemical protective clothing. Employees must complete an annual NFPA 1582 medical physical and be fit for duty through SBU. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.       Preferred Qualifications: NYS Emergency Medical Technician. Confined Space. Firefighter 2 Certification. Rope Rescue Technician and Rapid Intervention Certification.

      Brief Description of Duties: The Campus Safety Specialist - Per Diem will carry out the general duties such as (but not limited to): emergency response to fires and fire alarms, and other emergencies; conduct fire drills; and assist with the testing of fire protection systems; attend required training; and provide fire safety coverage for emergencies, impairments and special events. Duties to include the following:

      • Perform emergency response to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, confined space incidents, and other campus emergencies. Initiate building evacuations, search and rescue operations, extinguish incipient fires, and coordinate the response of outside assistance by local fire departments.

      • Attend required training and perform practical reviews as necessary to maintain certifications and proficiency in assigned tasks. Provide fire safety coverage for emergencies, impairments and special events.

      • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

      Special Notes: These are temporary, part time, hourly positions, shifts and pass days varied. Night and weekend work may be required. FLSA Nonexempt positions, eligible for overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
