Why This Role is Important to Us

Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) is thrilled once again to host its Summer Internship Program for clinical and non-clinical departments! The Internship Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from across the country. CCA Internships are a valuable way for students to obtain real-world experience, gain exposure to a specific field, build their network for the future, and support our members and communities. This program is a great way for CCA to attract and develop exceptional talent as we continue to grow.

Commonwealth Care Alliance Care Delivery Division is seeking a summer intern with an interest in healthcare delivery system innovation for a rare opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge and deep experience in the most interesting segment of US health care – Complex Care.

CCA is a nationally-recognized leader in providing care for people with disabilities and other serious needs, with roots going back to the 1970s and influence in multiple “unicorn” healthcare companies today. Enabled by a unique relationship with a payor-provider parent organization, Commonwealth Care Alliance, CCA achieves remarkable results that provide powerful lessons for health care policy, care redesign, and the care of vulnerable persons. The Care Delivery Division is comprised of Primary Care, Palliative Care, Community Intensive Care and Behavioral Health services with an opportunity for the intern to have exposure in a variety of service lines and influence key improvement efforts underway.

With a dual reporting to the Vice President of Care Delivery Operations and the Vice President of Care Redesign, the intern will work closely with the clinical and leadership team to examine and improve care delivery while receiving hands-on experience in the clinic as well as in home visits, which comprise a large share of Care Delivery operations.

Additionally, the intern will receive close supervision and direct teaching in healthcare management, quality improvement, and Lean process improvement, from an experienced and highly-rated former Harvard Medical/Public Health educator. Lastly, the intern will be given the opportunity to directly shape care delivery in ways that improve the lives of patients every day. Highly productive interns may have opportunities to produce a high-quality final product and/or scholarly publication. The specific focus will be determined by the needs of CCA and the interests of the candidate.

Strong quantitative and communication skills are a must; prior healthcare exposure is a plus, but not required. This is a hybrid role, ideally a mix of remote, in-clinic, and in-home time.

      What You'll Be Doing

      • Direct observation of clinical process to conduct Value Stream Analysis and identify improvement opportunities.
      • Design and test new clinical workflows and protocols to support care redesign
      • Work closely with service line leaders, physicians, advanced practice clinicians and other clinical and administrative support staff to recommend 1-2 meaningful improvement efforts.
      • Analyzing baseline and pilot data to evaluate impact and projects
      • Serve as key problem solver in optimizing home- based primary care service line
      • Support advancing population health efforts and improving the patient experience.

Hybrid with on-site location located at the CCA – Primary Care Center with opportunity to observe the delivery of care in the field including home-based care and innovative Mobile Urgent Care Model, within Boston vicinity.

      Additional Information

All internships will be paid standard and competitive rates for undergraduate and graduate levels ($23 and $25 per hour respectively). Internships are expected to be full-time through the duration of the program.

  • About the company

Based in Massachusetts, Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) is a not-for-profit, community-based healthcare organization dedicated to improving care for individuals who are dually eligible for MassHealth (Medicaid) and Medicare with complex medical, behavioral health and social needs, including persons with disabilities. CCA offers two health plans: Senior Care Options (HMO SNP), for individuals ages 65 and over who have Medicare and MassHealth Standard or only MassHealth Standard; and One Care, a Massachusetts demonstration program for dual eligible individuals ages 21 to 64. These comprehensive health plans provide all the services covered under Medicare and MassHealth, and other benefits as determined necessary by an inter-professional care team in conjunction with CCA’s preferred provider network. For four consecutive years, CCA’s One Care plan received a top consumer rating for quality and access in the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) national survey of Medicare-Medicaid Plans (2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019), administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS).
