- Operating, repairing, and maintaining equipment, machinery, and tools;
- Implementing procedures to assure efficient and safe operation of the lab;
- Preparing chemicals, glazes, substances and/or materials used to demonstrate techniques and/or carry out the ceramic process;
- Maintaining proper storage of materials and supplies;
- General supervision of the ceramics facility to ensure that students and student assistants are in compliance with proper facilities usage.
- Developing and implementing plans for maintaining security of materials, supplies and equipment;
- Solving problems related to location of materials and supplies related to amounts used and shelf life of materials;
- Responsibility for disposal of unsafe or hazardous materials;
- Monitoring lab inventories;
- Maintaining records of all lab related supplies and materials issued, used, and returned and makes reports;
- Procuring supplies;
- Preparing requisitions for equipment and supplies;
- Picking up materials from local vendors;
- Maintenance of budget record for ceramic area expenditures;
- Consulting with faculty to discuss instructional needs and develops plan;
- Training and monitoring Student Assistants in equipment maintenance, gas and electric kiln firing, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, maintaining plaster area, glaze making, slip mixing.
- Participate in standing and ad hoc committees related to the safety and maintenance of the ceramics studio.
- Procedures and practices relating to providing support services;
- Procedures and practices related to ordering and issue and inventory;
- All aspects of the ceramic medium including: firing gas and electric kilns, Raku firing process, glaze formulation, plaster process, slip making and casting process; and
- Tool and equipment usage and maintenance.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Electric and gas kiln repair; and
- Carpentry
- Use Excel for bookkeeping;
- Plan, organize, and follow schedules of activities;
- Learn quickly the names, uses and care of common types of materials, supplies, and equipment used in the instructional program assigned;
- Learn to operate equipment and to make adjustments;
- Train, plan and direct others; and
- Promote and foster a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

(Job #534365) Instructional Support Assistant II, Ceramics Technician, $2,549 - $2,676 ($3,398 - 3,568 FTE). Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a part-time, .75 time base, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary position in the Department of Art + Film. Position Summary:
Under the lead work direction of the Department Chair, the Ceramics Tech is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Art Department ceramics lab and providing instructional support assistance to the Art Department ceramics faculty.

Position requires frequently moving materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. The position requires the need to work with equipment situated with difficult access or in confined spaces.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: Equivalent to one year of experience performing support services for an instructional program and involving such activities as preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies, and equipment.
OR
Equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies, or equipment or in an office which provided similar services to a technical function or unit may be substituted for six months of the experience.
OR
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials. supplies, or equipment and in a discipline in the specialty area to which assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor of Fine Arts or Master of Fine Arts degree or combination of education and experience sufficient to manage an academic ceramic arts medium studio that has provided the incumbent with the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
