      The School of Medicine at the University of Missour i is soliciting applications from outstanding candidates for the Chair, Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences position. The candidate selected will be charged with the growth and development of clinical, teaching, and research excellence in the Department. The Chair reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs /Dean and serves as the department’s academic and administrative leader.

The Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences is a department of the School of Medicine and University of Missouri Health Care (UMHC) located in Columbia, Missouri. Our clinical faculty are members of University Physicians , the largest group practice plan in mid-Missouri, which assures a salary and incentive program competitive with other academic health systems in the U.S. In the past decade, MU Health Care has solidified its position as the market share leader in our region, which covers 25 counties with a total population of almost 800,000. We have six hospitals, more than 50 clinics, and multiple affiliations that have improved patient access in Columbia and surrounding communities. Amid a pandemic, we opened a new primary care clinic , committed to opening another , and broke ground on a seven-story patient care tower for children’s and birthing services. Encompassing Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Forensic Pathology, and Pathology Informatics, Integrative Anatomy, Neurosciences, Cancer Research. Researchers, scientists, and physicians synergize their expertise, paving the way for precise disease diagnosis and early treatment identification. These treatments give our patients access to truly personalized medicine based on factors as specific as the DNA of cancer tumors. As the home of a research reactor , we are able to pursue innovative research and make advanced, customized treatments right here in Missouri.

      Responsibilities:

      Strategic Leadership:

      • Develop and implement a vision and strategic plan for the Department of Pathology in alignment with the institution’s goals.
      • Lead and inspire faculty, staff, and trainees to achieve excellence in education, research, and clinical care.

      Academic Excellence:

      • Promote and support educational programs, ensuring high-quality training for medical students, residents, and fellows.
      • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development among department members.
      • Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes.

      Research:

      • Facilitate and promote cutting-edge research initiatives within the department.
      • Encourage collaboration and interdisciplinary research efforts both within the institution and externally.
      • Secure external funding and grants to support research endeavors.

      Clinical Services:

      • Provide leadership to ensure exceptional clinical care services, promoting patient safety and quality outcomes.
      • Collaborate with clinical partners to enhance diagnostic services and patient-centered care.

      Administration and Management:

      • Manage department budgets, resources, and facilities effectively and efficiently.
      • Recruit, retain, and mentor faculty and staff members to achieve departmental goals.

      Community Engagement:

      • Represent the department at institutional and external events, conferences, and professional organizations.
      • Collaborate with community stakeholders to promote awareness of the department’s contributions and impact.

      Required Qualifications:

      The successful candidate will have the following qualifications or attributes:

      • Doctoral degree (MD, DO, or MD/PhD)
      • Board certification in Pathology
      • Must be able to obtain a Missouri medical license.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      Proven Track Record in Leadership: Demonstrated substantial leadership experience in academic or administrative roles within the field of Pathology & Anatomical Sciences or a related discipline.

      Research Expertise: Profound research acumen with a history of impactful contributions to the field of Pathology & Anatomical Sciences, including a strong publication record.

      Successful Acquisition of Federal Research Grants: A demonstrated ability to secure federally funded research grants, such as those from prestigious funding agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

      Commitment to Excellence in Teaching: A passion for teaching and mentoring, with a history of fostering the academic growth and development of students and trainees in the area of Pathology & Anatomical Sciences.
