      Job summary

      The main purpose of the spiritual care/chaplaincy department is to facilitate a safe, appropriate, and confidential service of spiritual and religious care that enables patients, their families and friends and members of staff to explore their experience of life, death, illness, injury, change, loss, or stress so that they can begin to find strength, support and meaning within it.

      The post holder will be a key member of the chaplaincy team striving to fulfil this aim of providing spiritual care to patients, visitors, and staff, irrespective of their religion or belief. The post holder will be particularly responsible for supporting Muslim patients and staff within RBH, and for generic spiritual care support in one or more clinical areas under the direction of the head of the department. The post holder will facilitate & deliver spiritual care to patients, carers, and staff within RBH as appropriate & in line with national and local best practice guidance. They are expected to facilitate such care in terms of referring to an appropriate chaplain/faith leader/community faith group, if this is an identified need /request.

      Main duties of the job

      To conduct services of public worship if required in the hospital, in accordance with their own religious tradition and ecumenically as required, to administer faith community rites and practices to patients on the wards, and to otherwise provide for people who are unable to remain in contact with their faith community. To advise, or to seek advice, on all spiritual aspects of bereavement (pre and post death) care and funerals. To take part in or lead such memorial services and other corporate or public events as the trust requires.

      As part of team, to offer cover for religious and spiritual needs, specifically, overnight generic on-call each week as deemed necessary by the Department of Spiritual Care.

      To be available where opportunity arises to co-operate in the training of students, and to try and ensure all new members of Trust staff are familiar with the workings of the Department of Spiritual Care.

      To be able to offer such training to the Trust as required for their own particular faith community and be willing to be trained in order to offer specialised training in spiritual, ethical, cultural, and multi-faith issues.
