      The Mastercard Economics Institute’s mission is to drive macroeconomic thought leadership in support of Mastercard’s efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable digital economy. The Economics Institute was launched in 2020 to analyze macroeconomic trends through the lens of the consumer to deliver tailored and actionable insights on economic issues for key customers, partners and policymakers.

      With a team of economists and data scientists that utilize & synthesize data sets both from within Mastercard and beyond, the institute brings powerful insights to life, as well as thematic research on economic trends. The institute delivers tailored 1:1 presentations, participates in key industry forums, and contributes to global thought leadership via thematic papers, organizing events and participating in media.

      About the role
      We have an exciting opportunity for an economist to join the Economics Institute to expand our focus to the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. You will focus on creating custom, interactive, and actionable insights for LAC and develop a team to support the growth opportunities in the region. You will report to the Global Chief Economist and be responsible for (but not limited to):

      • develop and maintain macroeconomic views for LAC using advanced investigative methods and strong analytical and interpretative skills.
      • bring thought leadership for the region to better explore data and economic relationships.
      • create briefing documents for Mastercard leadership teams and regional advisory boards using new technology and innovative ways of bringing the information to life such as interactive visualizations.
      • write regular outlooks & blog-style research notes for clients and business leaders in the region.
      • a spokesperson for Mastercard, you will create content and present insights in customer forums, industry events, including media appearances as needed. On broadcast, print, and online media you will position us as an industry leader with highly differentiated capabilities.
      • drive the story creation and presentation dashboards for each customer presentation to develop custom and actionable insights.
      • collaborate with the data scientists/quantitative economists & thematic researchers to create interactive and tailored presentations.
      • work with the data science/quantitative economics team to explore alternative data sets, modeling and forecasting to push the boundaries of more traditional economics.
      • own project from briefing to ideation to exploration of data and insights, to building storyboarding and final presentation.
      • Build a team to support the growth of the LAC region.

      About you
      • a strong economist with an entrepreneurial mindset. Comfortable meeting with the largest CEOs in the world, with the executive presence and gravitas to deliver concise and on point media interviews.
      • evidence of both orthodox and experimental approaches in economic thinking, interpretation, or application.
      • manage complex projects and timelines effectively and handling evolving situations fluidly.
      • must have good knowledge of econometrics and economic relationships.
      • familiarity with coding in SQL, R, Python, Tableau and other analytical tools
      • openness to new ideas, approaches, challenges,
      • and environments
      • strong collaborator working across cross functional teams within the institute and the broader Mastercard teams.
      • strong English and Portuguese (preferred) and/or Spanish communications skills required.
      • available to travel as required.
      • Bachelor or Advanced degree in Economics required.
