      Job summary

      The Chief Nursing Officer will be accountable for providing clinical and professional leadership for all Nurses and Midwivesand Nursing Associates across health and social care in England including the 373,000 nurses and midwives who work for the NHS and who make up the largest group of the total NHS workforce as well as the nurses working in public health andthose in the independent sector.

      The post holder will also be accountable for providing expert clinical and workforce advice to the NHS and the Board of NHS England. As Chief Nursing Officer for England, the post holder will be required toprovide advice to Ministers and officials in the Department of Health and Social Care on relevant issues.

      Main duties of the job

      Accountable for ensuring that the views and insights of nurses and midwives are front and centre in leading and shaping the strategic direction of the NHS and the wider health and care sector as it moves towards delivering care through integrated care systems.

      Accountable for professional leadership of nursing and midwifery in England.

      Accountable for continuously driving improvements in professional standards across nursing and midwifery.

      Work with the Chief Medical Officer for England and the National Medical Director to deliver the national quality agendaincluding patient safety, patient experience and improved outcomes.

      Accountable for providing relevant and timely nursing and midwifery advice to the Government and senior officials and Ministers at the Department of Health and Social Care.

      Accountable for providing relevant and timely professional and clinical workforce advice to the NHS England Board as well as the wider NHS and systems, on nursing and midwifery related issues and opportunities.

      Accountable, alongside the National Medical Director, for leading clinical engagement activities across all national functions, ensuring that clinical input is at the heart of all improvement and transformation programmes.
