      Job Overview

      The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) is currently searching for a highly organized and experienced project manager to join our team as Chief of Staff & Senior Project Manager. Reporting jointly to the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, the Chief of Staff will be responsible for providing senior level project management and strategic execution to ensure the effective and efficient running of the museum and achievement of institutional goals.

      As Chief of Staff & Senior Project Manager you will be a part of an innovative team of professionals dedicated to telling South Carolina's diverse stories. As the storytellers of South Carolina, the SCSM strives to share the rich artistic, natural, technological and cultural diversity of the state through its permanent collections, programs, exhibitions and digital content. The SCSM is the largest museum in South Carolina, stewarding over 1.1 million objects and specimens and welcoming 5 million+ visitors over its 35-year history. The museum has recently embarked on a renovation of 150,000 square feet of its exhibition, programmatic and collection storage spaces occupying four floors of a historic 1890s textile mill on the National Register of Historic Places.       • Serves as lead project manager for the museum, working closely with the Executive Leadership and Management Teams to ensure that activities across the museum are well-planned to be executed efficiently and effectively.
      • Working closely with the museum’s Executive Leadership Team, develops and implements museum-wide policies, procedures and initiatives that promote the museum’s overall mission and vision and adhere to American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Accreditation standards. This work includes researching, benchmarking, analyzing data, making recommendations and creating systems and processes to streamline cross-functional operations.
      • Leads the museum’s annual tactical planning, State Budget reporting, and high-level presentations (including the annual Accountability Report).
      • Supports senior leadership in maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including management of the SCSM Museum Commission’s meetings, communications and operational needs. Acts as a museum liaison to the SCSM Foundation in support of the Foundation’s initiatives including its current Capital Campaign for the SCSM.
      • Serves as strategic advisor, counsel and office manager for the museum’s Executive Office, strategically helping the Executive Director and COO manage time and resources by evaluating opportunities, overseeing meetings and presentations, and operational support. This work includes oversight and management of the Executive Office’s budget, resources, equipment and supplies. Administers the Museum’s “Manager on Duty” program and coordinates the Executive Team’s weekly meetings and monthly all-staff meetings.
      • Leads the development and execution of the museum’s next Strategic Planning process (2024-2029) and contributes project management leadership to initiatives supporting the museum’s Reimagine the Experience project.
      • Contributes to a welcoming, respectful and positive museum environment, working collaboratively across departments to fulfill the Museum’s mission and vision in service to our audiences.
      • Bachelor’s degree in project management, business, museum studies, or a related field.
      • A minimum of 5 years of experience with expertise in project management in a multi-department professional organization.
      • Superior organizational skills to ensure effective use of individual time as well as contribute to the effective operation of an Executive Team.
      • An eye for detail and deadlines, with the ability to multi-task and handle several projects simultaneously.
      • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and garner authority through dedicated and genuine relationship building within diverse internal teams and key organizational leaders.
      • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the capacity to engage various stakeholders, including donors, government officials, and community leaders.
      • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and innovatively.
      • Flexibility and adaptability, including a willingness to take positive action in a changing environment and to effectively analyze situations and problem solve.
      • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create and manage dashboards, flowcharts, and digital communications.
      • Ability to represent the museum through travel statewide, including overnight trips.
      • Demonstrated experience in successfully leading cross-functional teams.
      • Demonstrated success in leading and executing strategic planning and/or museum accreditation planning.
      • Proven experience building and fostering positive relationships and contributing to a positive work environment in a senior role in a museum, cultural institution and/or related for-profit experience,
      • MBA, related master’s degree and/or PMP Certificate highly preferred.
