      Brown and Caldwell (BC) has an opportunity for a Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) who will be responsible for developing, implementing (in partnership with business operations), and overseeing the strategic direction of BC. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CSO will work closely with executive leadership to ensure that the company is well-positioned to sustain and build upon BC’s position as an industry leader in the water and environmental market.

      The CSO will lead Strategy, Business Transformation, Change Management, Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), Company Communications and be responsible for managing and leading the shared services functions that support these responsibilities.

      Detailed Description:

      The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) will be responsible for developing, implementing (in partnership with business operations), and overseeing the strategic direction of Brown and Caldwell. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CSO will work closely with executive leadership to ensure that the company is well-positioned to sustain and build upon BC’s position as an industry leader in the water and environmental market.

      The CSO will lead Strategy, Business Transformation, Change Management, Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), Company Communications and be responsible for managing and leading the shared services functions that support these responsibilities.

      This role has the potential to work virtually and can be filled near any BC office, preference of Denver, CO.

      Lead Strategy

      • Lead strategic planning process, including cyclical updates to strategic planning processes.
      • Create alignment on Criteria for Choice in strategic planning.
      • Craft company strategy by enrolling key executives, subject matter experts and future leaders in the process, helping team understand tradeoffs and make key choices that will drive company success.
      • Steward implementation and monitoring of progress for strategic objectives and strategic plan.
      • Drive implementation of strategy with business operations to achieve expected outcomes and return on investment from strategic investments.
      • Be a visible leader and communicator of the company strategy.
      • Align and coordinate with Chief Growth Officer (CGO), Chief Technical Officer (CTO), and Chief Operating Officer (COO) to implement growth strategies at the Business Unit and Enterprise level.
      • Maintain an external presence with industry counterparts, key clients and thought leaders.
      • In partnership with the Chief Growth Officer, Chief Technical Officer, and Business Unit Managers (BUMs), identify markets, services, and geographies to target for acquisition or strategic partnerships.
      • Guide Company investment philosophy to align with Company Strategy.

      Business Transformation and Change Management

      • Establish integrated approach that links company strategy to business transformation initiatives and business transformation initiatives to execution discipline, including, but not limited to rigorous change management practices.
      • Define and quantify the value proposition for business transformation initiative as well as the metrics monitored to track progress.
      • Develop and implement business transformation plan across other shared services working with functional leaders.
      • Provide executive oversight to company’s nascent change management function, helping it grow and evolve into a critical tool to becoming a more agile organization.
      • Develop long term plan for internal and external change management services.
      • Partner with other company executives to champion key transformation efforts (i.e., partner with the Chief Digital Officer and Chief Technical Officer to champion the company’s digital transformation efforts.

      Mergers and Acquisitions

      • Develop and integrate an M&A strategy that supports long term company strategic plan.
      • Establish connections with community of M&A advisors.
      • Monitor M&A activity, including valuations, market and service demand, and competitor strategies.
      • Identify M&A candidates that fill strategic gaps or could be strategic accelerators to company strategic plan.
      • Identify M&A targets; lead and nurture relationships to position BC as an acquirer.
      • Vet potential acquisitions for strategic fit and accretive value.
      • Working with executive team (CEO, COO, CTO, CGO, CPO, and CFO) to lead due diligence activities for potential deals.

      Company Communications

      • Provide executive oversight and direction over the communications function.
      • Set priorities for external branding, marketing campaigns, public relations, and video content creation.
      • Oversee the company’s external digital footprint including website, social media, BCWaterNews, and BC WaterJobs.
      • Oversee and allocate communications resources to internal communications priorities, including the company intranet (Pipeline), company announcements, townhall meetings, DE&I reporting, etc.

      Key Partners

      • CEO - provide guidance and direction on strategy, M&A, growth targets etc.
      • Strategy Committee Chair, Board of Directors – to provide counsel and connectivity to independent directors of the board.
      • Chief Growth Officer – key collaborator to provide guidance and recommendation on company strategy, facilitation of alignment of strategy with business units, enterprise units, and of external communications priorities.
      • Chief Operations Officer – provide input, and alignment between short term company objectives and long-term strategy, partner to drive adoption and implementation of strategy.
      • Chief Technical Officer – connecting market and client needs to technical strategies, collaborating on campaigns for innovative solutions and conferences.
      • Chief People Officer – coordinate on Talent Strategy, cultural elements of strategy and internal communications priorities.
      • CFO – partner for financial underpinning of company strategic plan, strategic growth initiatives, strategic planning process and support, ROI analysis, resource allocation.
      • Business Unit Managers – identify geographic and service growth opportunities in partnership with CGO.

      Desired Skills and Experience:

      • Accumulated knowledge of water and environment market, preferably from different perspectives and through leadership roles
      • Expertise in developing and executing organization level strategies.
      • Deep understanding of strategic planning processes, tools, and philosophies.
      • Deep understanding of competitive landscape
      • Experience with evaluating and integrating Mergers and/or Acquisitions.
      • Background in some combination of business functions, including sales, strategy, operations and/or finance.
      • Analytical/Strategic thinker and compelling speaker, excellent communicator
      • Trust, honesty, integrity, ability to keep confidential info, discretion, etc.
      • MBA helpful
      • 15+ plus years of experience.

      Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

      All locations salary range: $240,000 to $315,000
