      GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT

      Under the direction of the Sleep Disorders Unit Medical Director and Neurology Administrative Manager, the incumbent manages the operations and staff of the outpatient Sleep Disorders Lab. Responsible for the overall management of the polysomnography technologists, which includes but is not limited to: hiring, corrective action, performance appraisal, orientation and training, staffing schedules and assignments, standard operating procedures, technical and training activities in the Sleep Lab, coaching and mentoring of existing staff, and ongoing performance and quality assessment. The Chief Technologist also functions as the technical expert for the unit. Ensures that the study quality and customer service standards and goals are met, both for testing performed in the lab as well as at the patient’s home. Works closely with other Chief Technologists to standardize processes across labs. Monitors the unit’s scheduling and billing processes. Creates monthly work/on-call/vacation staffing schedule. Responsible for the maintenance of the sleep databases and archiving of studies. Ensures and maintains a professional atmosphere within the laboratory at all times. May delegate responsibilities as appropriate.

      PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      With input from the Division Chief and Administrative Manager, manages the interviewing and hiring processes when recruiting new polysomnography technologists. Provides orientation and training to new hires. Directs the activities of the technical support staff, plans lab schedules, assigns priorities according to workload and clinical urgency. Monitors performance and provides corrective action as necessary. Supports technologist team and challenges each staff member to work at the top of their ability.

      Works closely with the Administrative and Medical Directors to develop and maintain unit policies, programs, and procedures to maximize patient safety, unit efficiency and enhance the quality of service provided to patients. Works closely with Administrative Manager to monitor and manage lab budget, staffing, and department initiatives. Develops and proposes innovating strategies for improving lab quality and efficiency. Keeps track of weekly and monthly lab statistics.

      Collaborates with stakeholders to manage and oversee strategic development of the lab. This includes achieving and maintaining lab accreditation, managing supply ordering and inventory management, participating in initiatives to extend Sleep services, developing innovative staffing models to facilitate tech participation in daily clinical activities and clinical report generation, and tracking lab volume closely and accurately. Other strategic imperatives of this role include facilitating complex and just in time testing for VIP patients and referring clinicians and staying on the cutting edge of Sleep technology and monitoring techniques.

      Addresses all performance and operations/systems issues proactively and in a timely manner.

      Oversees process for entering patient information and billing information by technologists into the unit reporting system.

      May instruct attending faculty and fellows/residents in the use and maintenance of unit medical equipment and specialized procedures and protocols and assists trainees in screening and reading Sleep studies. Creates strong working relationships with fellows and other clinical staff, encourages cooperation within the team.

      Participates in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment by collecting and processing data.

      Monitors workflow for scoring and assigning in lab and home sleep studies. Assigns studies to physicians to be read according to guidelines set by division chief.

      Troubleshoots equipment and workflow issues independently.

      Ensures effective and efficient scheduling system. Oversees and coordinates with other MGH departments as necessary regarding patient scheduling.

      Ensures all patient information is properly collected, processed, and stored appropriately (according to HIPAA requirements).

      Maintains supplies and equipment for unit in conjunction with Clinical Engineer. Oversees inventory and supply ordering. Informs Administrative Director of needed special purchases and equipment. Oversees maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, inspection and cleaning of unit equipment. Notifies manager of needed repairs. Coordinates the scheduling and use of equipment.

      Participates in internal and external conferences, technical, and staff meetings. Leads regular technologist staff meetings and includes physician or administrative team members as needed.

      SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

      Ability to perform routine and complex sleep tests (complex PSG recordings, apnea studies, nocturnal seizure studies, parasomnia studies, MSLTs, and CPAP fittings) on patients of all ages. Expert on home sleep testing technology and able to help troubleshoot patient questions and issues.

      Excellent organizational skills.

      Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

      Must have excellent written/oral communication and organizational skills.

      Must be able to demonstrate effective management and leadership abilities and have demonstrated team building ability.

      Ability to make independent effective decisions.

      Ability to identify problems, troubleshoot, and develop solutions.

      LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS

      Certifications required: BRPT

      Registrations required: CPR

      EDUCATION

      Minimum Required:

      High school diploma, GED or equivalent

      Certificate: Graduation from an accredited Neurodiagnostic training program

      Preferred:

      Bachelor’s Degree

      Master’s Degree

      EXPERIENCE

      Required: Graduate of an accredited sleep technologist's program or has completed the AASM's A-Step program with successful completion of all the A-Step modules. Minimum of 5 years of experience required.

      Preferred: Supervisory experience preferred

      Professional Staff Supported: >10 physicians

      FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

      Manages supply budget in conjunction with Administrative Manager.
