      What You’ll Be Doing

      Operating under a national mandate, the Corporate Finance team provides Leveraged Finance, and Mid-Market Investment Banking services to mid-market and corporate clients in a diversified set of Canadian industries. This position will be located in the Montreal office, primarily assisting with covering a portfolio of clients, evaluating new opportunities within the province of Quebec and in Atlantic Canada, and merger & acquisition advisory mandates.

      CIBC’s Leveraged Finance team provides specialized leveraged finance solutions such as acquisition financing, mezzanine financing, and other structured financings focused on private equity sponsored transactions. The team has a three-pronged mandate: i) providing national coverage of private equity sponsors; ii) concluding highly-structured, event-based transactions, often alongside CIBC Commercial Banking Relationship Managers; and iii) delivering mezzanine debt solutions to our clients nationally.

      The Mid-Market Investment Banking group is focused on serving the specific M&A advisory needs of private companies for divestitures, acquisitions, management buyouts, raising equity capital and securing debt financing. With offices in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, Mid-Market Investment Banking is a leading M&A advisor, and is ranked as the most active mid-market advisor in Canada for the last 20 years as measured by aggregate transaction volume of M&A deals of up to $150 million in enterprise value.

      As an Analyst with the corporate finance team, you will partner with other team members in preparing and assisting in presentations of financing proposals to prospective clients, underwriting new credit transactions, assist with the appropriate documentation for accepted credit proposals, negotiations and closing, and assisting in the portfolio management of the existing loan book, in addition to assisting Analysts, Associates and senior bankers in executing on Merger and Acquisition advisory mandates. This will include researching industries, potential buyers and public valuation metrics; working on in-depth financial models of acquisitions and recapitalizations; assisting in the preparation of extensive written documents including business development proposals and confidential information memorandums. Co-op Analysts will get tremendous exposure to experienced senior bankers and 1 on 1 mentoring from their colleagues through their 4 month work term.

      How You’ll Succeed

      • Client First –You will attend discussions with client management (executive, financial and operational) in order to assess client’s financing needs. Perform comprehensive financial/non-financial analysis and risk assessment of credit proposals. Assist in preparation of financing proposals (structuring terms and conditions including security, covenants and pricing) to properly reflect and compensate CIBC for assessed risk. Prepare draft recommendations on credit submissions to present to senior management. Assist with comprehensive due diligence on all transactions. Prepare credit memoranda and other credit correspondence in a well thought out, thorough and efficient manner and in accordance with policies and procedures.

      • Relationship Building – Develop good relations with internal customers, external customers and general industry contacts to generate new referrals and business opportunities and to maintain a window on the market.

      • Collaboration – Partner with your team to connect clients with opportunities. Monitor and supervise a portfolio of senior and subordinated debt accounts. Manage relationships with borrowers and Relationship Managers. Monitor account performance and industry trends. Maintain a proactive approach to continuous risk assessment and report observations. Assist in negotiation of terms and conditions of proposals.

      • Business Acumen – You have working knowledge of commercial lending, including a focus on specialized senior and subordinated lending products (i.e. ABL, structured/acquisition financings, loan syndication) and other CIBC group core products and services. Knowledge of business, legal, tax, banking and regulatory framework affecting financial requirements of customers is a plus. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to clients.
