District 6 encompasses the greater Boston area and includes 19 Municipalities as well as the Central Artery Tunnel infrastructure.

District 6 runs operations day and night to work around peak travel times as well the necessity to coordinate many projects in limited areas.

The district has a wide variety of projects ranging from traditional Highway & Bridge type work to Tunnel, Building, Facility, and complex bridge work. These projects require good interactions and communications among the district sections in both the Design & Construction phases.

Position Summary
Civil engineers who have a passion for transportation are needed for numerous positions throughout the organization. At MassDOT we have positions that require candidates to be on construction sites and others that are in an office site managing district infrastructure.
Incumbents of positions in this series prepare or review plans, designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects, prepare and/or review reports, studies and analytical data; perform calculations relating to engineering problems; perform engineering surveys; inspect construction and/or maintenance work, and perform professional engineering duties in such areas as highways, bridges, buildings and facilities all in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulation and standards.
Civil Engineers may work in an office or outside in all types of weather and under exposure to such hazardous conditions as those found on construction sites and may travel for job related purposes. Covering night construction operations, when scheduled, is expected.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform all functions of a Civil Engineer II in either the District Project Development, Construction, Bridges, Structures, Tunnels, Maintenance or Traffic section. Placement of candidates will depend on the candidate’s area of expertise, previous job experience, education history, and based on District needs.
These positions may be required to work days, nights and/or weekends based on position assignment.
Project Development
This position will be assigned to the District Project Development Section and will participate in a broad range of work such as field evaluation, survey, design and review of project elements such as Construction Plans, Contract Estimates, Special Provision, Environmental Documents, Right-of-Way Plans, Utility Plans and Traffic related Plans. They will also assist in preparing design and feasibility studies for highway improvements.
It is preferred that candidates have experience in highway design and highway survey and be experienced in the use of Civil 3D highway design, drafting software and BlueBeam Review.
Construction
Perform all functions of Assistant to Resident Engineer on contracts with scopes of work that includes activities such as interstate resurfacing, roadway reconstruction, bridge/tunnel rehabilitation, and bridge/tunnel replacement. Perform all functions of Resident Engineer on contracts with scopes of work that includes activities such as roadway reconstruction, simple span bridge construction, complex traffic signal betterment, and intersection reconstruction. Inspect or monitor inspection by subordinate personnel of construction operations to ensure conformance to contract provisions, contract plans, Standard Specifications, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and other technical standards. Prepare or approve all contract documentation both hand-written or computer generated on-site at construction projects or at the District Office.
Bridge and Structures
Incumbents assigned to the District Bridge section and will perform duties related to design, inspection, repair, and preservation of MassDOT bridges, tunnels, buildings, and related facilities. This includes preparing, reviewing (both in house and consultant design), Structural calculations, Specification and Cost Estimate (PS&Es) for bridge and tunnel replacement, bridge and tunnel rehabilitation and other bridge and tunnel improvement projects and for supporting the district's bridge and tunnel maintenance and preservation programs. This may also involve evaluating structural adequacy for the safe continued use of damaged or deteriorated bridges and tunnels and will support development of design assignments and resolution of construction issues. Occasional short-term assignments in Bridge Inspection as a Team Member may also be required.
Preferred working experience in bridge or tunnel design, bridge or tunnel construction, bridge or tunnel project development and/or bridge or tunnel inspection. It is preferred that Incumbents for this position have an understanding of National Bridge Design Codes, National Bridge Inspection Standards, MassDOT Bridge Management System, Mass DOT Bridge Manual, the Project Development and Design Guide, the Standard Specifications for Highways and Bridges and the Construction Standards.
Maintenance
Performs engineering work related to District Highway Maintenance Operations, Traffic Maintenance, Snow & Ice Operations, Permits, Facilities, Maintenance Contracts, and Accident Recovery. Incumbents will assist in the inspection of maintenance contracts.
Traffic
This position would be assigned to the District’s Traffic Operations Section. Incumbents will prepare or review plans, designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects; Performing Safety Engineering based functions to include RSAs, Crash Data Analysis, HSIP project development, Add Work Zone Operations, Temporary Traffic Control Plan Review, Work Hour Assignments, Field Review & Adjustments and assistance with Traffic Specifications, Standard Drawings, Equipment Reviews. Incumbents will assist in the inspection of traffic maintenance contracts.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology**, may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering**, may be substituted for the required experience.*
**NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, soils, sanitary, environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
