Job Description

- Makes topographic and alignment surveys of selected projects utilizing surveying instruments and preparing field notes.
- Assists in preparing topographic and detail maps. Transfers field notes into detailed drawings, develops preliminary trail and road gradients, prepares design data forms, computes project quantities, transfers these quantities and final gradients to plans.
- Makes design calculations and prepares specifications for selected portions of projects for forest development facilities including roads, trails, water and wastewater facilities, buildings, bridges, culverts and other engineering facilities.
- Assists in inspecting construction projects for adherence to approved plans and specifications. Determines compliance with respect to dimensions, use of designated materials, progress of work, etc.
- Gathers data for maintenance surveys, participates in inspections, and performs a variety of other duties for work experience and training.
- Performs other assignments to broaden knowledge of Forest Service activities in areas such as timber, fire, recreation, wildlife and/or business management.
- Assignments consist of duties involving related steps, processes, or methods, designed to orient the trainee in the practical application of policy and basic rules and regulations.
- Has completed, or is pursuing, a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering or an equivalent degree program.
- Bi-lingual communication skills are not required but is a plus.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English is required.
- Skill in expressing thoughts both verbally and in writing is required to document and report on technical aspects of work.
- Knowledge of basic civil engineering principles and concepts sufficient to apply standard engineering practices.
- Requires physical exertion, such as walking over rough, uneven or steep surfaces.
- $18.75/hr
- $50/month commuting stipend
- $1,000/month housing stipend
- Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, training, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals.
- Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.
- Option for health insurance coverage during full term.
Civil Engineer Trainee
Location: Rio Grande, Puerto Rico
Description
El Yunque National Forest is looking for a Civil Engineer Trainee GS-0810-05/07 (Full Performance GS-0810-09).
This is a professional civil engineering trainee position. The civil engineer trainee will work closely with the Engineering Staff Officer. As a civil engineer trainee, the trainee will perform one of more duties listed below as development toward a higher-level position.
