      Job Summary

      Under general supervision of the Administrative Director of Ophthalmology, guided by the policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the medical director and physician staff, the Clinical Nurse II (CN II) performs established nursing procedures using clinical knowledge to care for adult and pediatric patients. The nurse provides excellent clinical care, telephone advice, and patient education to the Ophthalmology and pediatric surgical specialty patients. The CN II will comply with the Medical Center house and Telephone Standards.

      The CN II is accountable for his/her own practice and has primary responsibility for utilizing nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe patient care in the outpatient clinical setting. The nurse carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required and performs nursing care for patients with complex needs. CN II is recognized as a leader and clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the practice and organization. CN II serves as resource for all clinical staff and initiates and participates in patient and staff education. The Clinical Nurse II is responsible for nursing in the following Ophthalmology subspecialties:

      Oculoplastics
      Comprehensive ophthalmology
      Retina
      Glaucoma
      Cornea and Refractive Surgery
      Oncology/Retinoblastoma
      Neuro-Ophthalmology
      Optometry

      The Clinical Nurse II must have the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients, and providers. A high degree of independence, initiative, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff, and patients in a complex environment.



      The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

      Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

      The salary range for this position is $84.78 - $109.85 (Hourly Rate).

      Department Description

      UCSF's ophthalmology department provides all levels of eye care, from routine checkups to highly specialized services such as neuro-ophthalmology, ocular oncology and oculoplastic surgery. Patients come from all over the state and country, as well as abroad, to seek care from UCSF eye specialists.

      In the latest U.S. News & World Report annual Best Hospitals survey, UCSF ranks No. 9 in the nation for ophthalmology and is the highest-ranked program in Northern California. UCSF is also the largest recipient in the country of vision research funding from the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute. UCSF's innovative research has shaped the field, from fundamental discoveries in how visual perception works to the development of modern cataract surgery implants.

      The Ambulatory Ophthalmology practices at Mission Bay, East Bay, and Parnassus, are comprised of the following sub-specialty practices:

      Comprehensive Ophthalmology
      Optometry
      Neuro-ophthalmology
      Ocular Oncology
      Cornea
      Glaucoma
      Retina
      Oculoplastics
      Adult Strabismus
      PROSE
      Pediatric Ophthalmology (indirectly)

      Required Qualifications

      • One year of working as an RN in an Ambulatory Clinic setting
      • Two years of medical/surgical RN experience
      • One year of oncology RN experience
      • Strong Written and Verbal Communication Skills
      • Ability to multitask and balance competing priorities

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Experience in one of the following areas:
        • Outpatient Ophthalmology Setting
        • Academic Ambulatory Specialty Setting

      License/Certification

      • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
      • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
