In the US, youth and young adults living with HIV (YLWH) have the lowest level of virologic suppression compared to older age groups and experience significant health disparities with regard to HIV treatment initiation and clinical outcomes. Additionally, mental health (MH) and substance use (SU) impact every step of the HIV care continuum from diagnosis to virologic suppression and exacerbate socioeconomic challenges of linkage and sustained access to healthcare.

The iVY (Intervention for Virologic suppression in Youth) study is an NIH-funded randomized clinical trial that aims to test the efficacy of a “youth-friendly” technology-based intervention among YLWH (18–29 years old) in CA. This piloted and protocolized intervention combines: (1) brief weekly sessions with a counselor via a video-chat platform (video-counseling) to discuss mental health, substance use, HIV care engagement, and other barriers to care; and (2) a mobile health application (app) to address barriers such as ART forgetfulness and social isolation. The intervention’s goal is to identify those who require more MH, SU, and/or HIV-related counseling; provide information, motivation, and behavioral skills for dealing with MH, SU, and HIV care engagement challenges to address mild–moderate MH symptoms or low–moderate levels of SU; and assist with linking/ relinking to more extensive MH, SU, and/or HIV treatment, as needed.

Under general supervision, the CSW III will administer the video-counseling portion of the iVY intervention for YLWH, refine intervention and research protocols, and develop tools to evaluate fidelity to the intervention. The CSW III will work in collaboration with the research team, which includes a licensed clinical psychologist, the Principal Investigator, and research staff, to support other research activities such as recruitment/enrollment procedures, manuscript preparation, hiring/training other counselors, and developing presentations or presenting data, as needed.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

n/a The Division of Prevention Science (DPS) is based at the Mission Bay campus at 550 16th Street. The division was established within the Department of Medicine in 1991 and is the administrative home of the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS), the Prevention Research Center (PRC), the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health (CoE), and the Research Coordinating Center to Reduce Disparities in Multiple Chronic Diseases (RCC-RD-MCD). The division’s research focus is risk behavior and reduction; epidemiology of the virus; evaluation of HIV testing procedures, demographic variables and sexual self-identification; and training for providers who care for HIV AIDS patients. The division is comprised of approximately 40 academics (faculty, specialists, postdocs, and visiting professors) and 55 non-academic staff. • CSWIII: Masters degree in social work, psychology or related field from an accredited university, possession of clinical social worker license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners, and three years of post-master's experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position..
• Minimum of six months experience providing clinical social work services to adults with HIV, six months experience with young adults (18-29), and six months experience working with people who use substances, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated skills in evidence-based individual psychotherapy (e.g. CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, etc.).
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience with populations diverse in gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
• Ability to work independently and safely with individuals located in the community, via telehealth
• Knowledge of ethical, legal, and confidentiality issues pertaining to telehealth interventions.
• Comfort in using technology such as use of telehealth, text messaging, and mobile apps.
