      Job Summary:
      The Clinical Assessment Specialist (CASP) will work under the supervision of the Office of Assessment and Evaluation and the Department of Clinical Science leadership for the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM). The CASP will have a critical part in the success of the outcomes-based education system by ensuring that KPSOM students receive a standardized and meaningful assessment of their clinical skills while on rotations at Kaiser Permanente (KP) sites, as well as individualized coaching and feedback to improve those skills. This role will also work with the KPSOM assessment team to develop and pilot the use of assessment tools and be eligible for a faculty appointment with KPSOM.

      Essential Responsibilities:
      • Assessment Overview
      • Year 1 - Family Medicine/ Internal Medicine (FM/IM)
      • CASPs will assess 1st Year FM/IM students in each clerkship and complete three different comprehensive clinical observation assessments: information gathering, documentation, and patient collaboration. Multiple assessments may be completed by the CASP based on a single patient encounter, depending on the students skills used in caring for that patient. At least one assessment may be filled out per clinical session with a CASP present, with an aim of at least three assessments per clerkship over the course of the year.
      • Year 2 - FM/IM and Pediatrics
      • CASPs will assess 2nd Year FM/IM and Pediatric students over the year, utilizing ratings from third-trimester assessments to determine course grades. CASP ratings will derive from CASP completion of any or all of the three possible forms: information gathering, documentation, and patient collaboration.
      • Assessment Responsibilities
      • Observe and assess student clinical performance on clinical rotations, using standardized criteria and focusing on the history and physical examination, patient communication and counseling, clinical reasoning, use of the electronic health record (EHR), documentation, procedural skills, interdisciplinary skills, the application of evidence-based medicine and professionalism
      • Provide individualized coaching and teaching to students in the clinical setting, including assistance with identifying learning goals and specialized resources for learning
      • Complete appropriate assessment forms and other documentation, including rich narrative commentary as appropriate
      • Communicate in a timely manner with Clerkship Directors, Clinical Course Directors, and/or KPSOM Deans regarding students requiring non-routine and/or urgent attention and provide feedback regarding the learning environment
      • Collaborate with the appropriate individuals to schedule the required observations of all students
      • Participate in the remediation of medical students
      • Participate as a faculty rater in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations and in case development and review of simulation encounters
      • Participate in the development and ongoing quality improvement of assessment practices, forms, and tools, including the determination of performance and competency measures and systems of monitoring for unconscious bias
      • Attend monthly CASP check-ins at scheduled times where learning from assessments is shared collectively, and important CASP program information is disseminated and discussed
      • Participate as members in the Competency Committee work for Competency Committee meetings
      • Faculty Development
      • Participate in initial and ongoing faculty development to acquire and continually improve knowledge and skills in assessment, coaching and outcomes-based education, including workshops, journal clubs, and assigned online courses and self-directed programs
      • Participate as appropriate in the training of faculty new to this role and faculty serving as raters of Objective Structured Clinical Examination

      • Participate and/or present at educational governance committees, meetings of curricular working groups, and/or assessment-related committees as directed.

      • Be able to commit 0.1-0.2 (10%-20%) Full-Time Equivalent (FTE), which includes some dedication of the CASP time for faculty development and preparatory work for this role; the school will re-evaluate the time commitment periodically
      • Must follow SCPMG time expectations and practices (i.e., use Education Time (ET) for the first half day per week)
      • Be able to arrange time and schedule to meet the students needs; schedule will be arranged collaboratively to minimize the impact on physician clinical practice.
