Job summary
The post is based at St Thomas' Hospital for 12 months. The post involves active involvement in a busy emergency general surgery team including ambulatory emergency general surgery clinics and dedicated emergency theatre sessions and participates in the daytime registrar rota. Time in elective general surgery would be focused on high-volume low-complexity day and short-stay surgery and associated clinics. Exposure to main theatre including complex tertiary surgery would also be available.
The Clinical Fellow will provide support to the Emergency General Surgery service in the form of daytime emergency on take shifts on the registrar rota, emergency ambulatory clinics and elective general surgery clinics, and emergency and elective theatre, including some elective general surgery theatre sessions off site. In addition, ward cover and administrative duties attached to these clinical commitments.
The Clinical Fellow in Emergency General Surgery would suit applicants looking for a well-supported first registrar grade post, and/or those with a special interest in emergency general surgery.
Main duties of the job
Upper GI at St Thomas's is the designated the regional unit for gastro-oesophageal malignancies and also provides surgery for upper gastrointestinal benign disease. There is also a tertiary endocrine surgical service for thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease.
Lower GI Unit has special interests in inflammatory bowel disease surgery, locally advanced, recurrent rectal cancer resection and laparoscopic and robotic surgery and has a tertiary referral pelvic floor unit, with regular MDMs held in each of these subspecialties. We have regular departmental teaching, access to courses and a simulation centre on site.
