      The Opportunity:

      The Veterinary Clinical Laboratory of Easter Bush Pathology, part of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine, is looking for a highly motivated and versatile clinical laboratory technician to join its team of 5 laboratory technical staff and 8 veterinary clinical pathologists.

      The appointee will be responsible for carrying out diagnostic work within the Veterinary Clinical Laboratory, which consists in haematology (including coagulation and cross-matching), clinical biochemistry, cytology (preparation of slides and fluids for pathologist review), faecal analysis, and urinalysis. Other duties will include routine maintenance of equipment and various analysers, reagent preparation, and carrying out QC procedures to current Health & Safety standards. The laboratory serves all hospitals of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (Small animals, Large animals, and Equine hospital), as well as receiving samples from external practices and research groups. The successful candidate will join a team consisting of a laboratory manager, 4 laboratory technicians and 7 veterinary clinical pathologists in a state-of-the-art facility ideally located on many bus routes and good commuter links at the foot of the picturesque Pentland hills, and will benefit from the University of Edinburgh staff benefits page (opens in a new tab).

      This post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns.

      The salary for this post is £29,179 to £33,482 per annum, pro-rata if part-time.

      Your skills and attributes for success:

      • HNC (or equivalent degree) in biological sciences - or - relevant experience working in a diagnostic laboratory – or - RCVS nurse registration (RVN) is essential.
      • Experience in diagnostic haematology and/or clinical chemistry is essential; experience in faecal analysis, urinalysis, cytology, coagulation testing and cross matching is desirable.
      • Working knowledge of equipment and procedures and experience in working to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)/ Methods and Guides is essential.
      • Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential.
      • Good computer literacy.
