- Serve as an institutional resource and subject matter expert in federal and state regulations and OHSU policy applicable to clinical research billing.
- Collaborate with leadership in the development of policies and processes for appropriate and compliant billing of clinical services furnished in clinical studies at OHSU.
- Establish and document consistent standards for clinical research charge management.
- Establish and document quality review processes.
- Educate investigators and clinical research staff on federal and state regulations, Medicare rules, and institutional policies relevant to compliant clinical research billing.
- Determine effective processes for transmitting and coordinating clinical research billing information to hospital and professional billing.
- Serve as primary contact for clinical research billing related inquiries to identify ongoing issues and coordinate with appropriate parties to determine root cause and track solution.
- Monitor Medicare determinations that apply to clinical research and collaborate with affected parties on any required changes in processes, policies, or billing determinations.
- Work with PIs, study coordinators, clinical research billing program staff, and billing offices to develop processes and procedures regarding research accounts and charge reconciliation.
- Perform periodic monitoring and review of research charges to ensure compliance. Work with the OHSU Internal Auditor and Compliance Office to initiate internal audits of selected studies.

- Bachelor’s degree
- Seven years of experience in clinical research, billing compliance, or related field
- Working knowledge of requirements related to coding, billing, and/or clinical operations
- Experience reviewing, interpreting, and providing guidance on regulatory rules and standards
- Ability to read and comprehend complex medical and scientific terminology and procedures in order to provide thorough and accurate guidance and assessments
- Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment
- Effective organizational abilities, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to operate and communicate effectively while meeting multiple deadlines and completing projects simultaneously
- Ability to interact in a positive, productive manner with peers and customers at all levels of the organization (demonstrating sensitivity, tact, and professionalism)
- Certification in compliance, clinical research or coding, such as ACRP, SoCRA, AAPC, AHIMA, or HCCA, to be obtained within one year of hire
- Specific or additional training/experience in the management and coordination of clinical trials
- Clinical compliance, coding, and/or billing experience at an academic medical center --specific experience in the clinical research process at OHSU
- Functional knowledge of current coding, billing, and clinical compliance requirements
- Demonstrated leadership and formal/informal influence skills
- Advanced knowledge in federal and state laws, regulations, and guidance relating to coding, billing, clinical compliance and related areas
- Current certification in compliance, clinical research or coding, such as ACRP, SoCRA, AAPC, AHIMA, or HCCA
Department Overview
The Clinical Research Services Office functions as a central service office, overseeing industry sponsored research contracting, clinical research billing compliance, OHSU's clinical trials management system, and federal reporting compliance. Additionally, the CRSO helps to set some of the standards and policies for the conduct of clinical research at OHSU. We also seek to engage clinical research staff in community building, training and education through partnering with other OHSU departments and teams via the Clinical Research United (CRU) initiative.
Function/Duties of Position
This position provides regulatory and operational guidance to the institution in the development of processes, materials and training that optimize the conduct of clinical research while ensuring compliant billing of clinical services furnished within the context of clinical research.
