Under the direction of the Business Development Manager, the Specialist is responsible for planning and implementing strategies to maximize the access, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and safety of drug use, developing and ensuring compliance with formulary and drug use policies, achieving fiscal goals as established by the department business plan, providing guidance and support to staff, serving as liaison to clinical leadership/clinics regarding Specialty Pharmacy clinical capabilities and precepting pharmacy residents and students.

      Responsibilities

      • 1. Enhance clinical quality and safety of medication use process
        • 1.1 Develop and implement drug use and/or medication safety guidelines/protocols/policies.
      • 2. Manage Pharmaceutical Expense for Target Therapies and/or Clinical Areas
        • 2.1 Report on the status of drug target performance and special projects (e.g. Drug Use Optimization, subcommittee agendas, etc) to the Associate Director at least once a month
      • 3. Mentor and develop pharmacy staff
        • 3.1 Supports the ongoing development of clinical staff by providing continuous performance feedback.
      • 4. Serve as Clinical and Operational resource to assigned areas
        • 4.1 Meets with area staff to discuss and resolve operational problems/areas in need of attention
      • 5. Develop educational initiatives
        • 5.1 Identify educational needs of staff

        Qualifications

        EDUCATION

        Graduate from an accredited College of Pharmacy with a B.S., M.S., or Pharm. D. degree. Completion of a residency in hospital pharmacy from a program accredited by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists is highly desired but not required.

        EXPERIENCE

        Minimum of three years of experience in a clinical practice setting with demonstrated skills in formulary/access evaluation, drug information, and project management. Experience in leading or participating in medical committees and application of quality improvement techniques is required.

        LICENSURE

        Active Connecticut Pharmacist License

        SPECIAL SKILLS

        Experience in drug utilization/access review and data analysis (e.g. MS Excel, MS Access) is highly desirable. Excellent written and verbal presentation skills are required. Should be familiar with Change Acceleration Process (CAP) or similar process improvement/change management skills.
