      Job Description
      *This position will be an hourly part-time designated/benefitted position effective July 1, 2025,
      with up to 35 hours per workweek.


      Under the general supervision of the Senior Code Enforcement Specialist, the Code Enforcement Officer ensures compliance with applicable occupancy, zoning, land use, building and safety, public nuisance, and other municipal code violations. This position is required to perform extensive fieldwork, be in frequent contact with the public, and work occasionally on weekends, evenings and some holidays.

      Typical Duties Performed

      • Responds to questions and concerns from the public, departmental staff, and other agencies; provides information as appropriate and resolves service issues and complaints.
      • Receives complaints regarding occupancy, zoning, land use, building and safety, public nuisance, and other municipal code violations.
      • Conducts field investigations regarding possible violations of a variety of City codes and ordinances, including zoning, nuisance, property maintenance, housing, and business license/permits.
      • Maintains files, databases, daily inspection logs and records related citations and violations; prepares a variety of written reports, memoranda and correspondence.
      • Issues notices of violations and citations related to municipal code violations.
      • Prepares cases for legal action, summarizes evidence gathered in the course of periodic inspections, and may appear in court to present testimony.
      • Research and interpret laws, codes, and regulations.
      • Serves as a resource to other City departments on zoning and other code requirements.
      • Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related non-sworn duties as assigned.

      The incumbent in this position will be a non-sworn employee of the City of La Mirada and will not be a sworn officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
      Minimum Qualifications
      Knowledge of:Applicable laws, ordinances, codes, and development standards related to building and safety, fire, parking, zoning, and public nuisances; methods for gaining legal compliance from property owners; basic methods and techniques of field inspections and investigations of land uses and structures; appropriate safety hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques and requirements; operations, services and activities of a code enforcement program; and principles and procedures of record keeping.
      Ability to: Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; learn and correctly interpret and apply laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures; conduct investigations into code violations; learn and explain fire, building, health, and parking ordinances, land use regulations, development standards, and maintenance standards, and to apply this knowledge to specific work problems; enforce provisions of the La Mirada Municipal Code with firmness, tact, impartiality and a high level of customer service; read and interpret maps, plans, and legal descriptions; deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions; present a clean, neat appearance appropriate to successful public contact. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. and work occasionally on evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
      EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

      One year of experience in code enforcement, building inspection, urban planning, law enforcement or related field is required. Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required. College coursework in a related field is desirable.
      LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

      Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License without suspensions prior to and throughout employment is required.

      Supplemental Information
      Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case-by-case basis.
      SELECTION PROCESS:

      Applicants will be screened based on the qualifications for the job as described. Applications evaluated as best matching the needs of the City will continue in the selection process. The selection process may include any or all of the following: oral interview(s), a written or practical examination, a skills test, and an assessment center examination. The selection process may be changed as deemed necessary by the City Human Resources Office.
      Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment requirements to include live scan fingerprinting and a medical examination as part of the Selection Process. Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.

      The City of La Mirada offers a competitive compensation and benefits package based on the adopted Appointments are normally made at the first step of a five step salary range. One year of City service is required to advance to the next pay step in the salary range.
